Blue Ridge Naturalist Program Offers Science Workshops for Teachers

The Blue Ridge Naturalist, a program of the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement, will hold week-long summer workshops for teachers on the UNC Asheville campus. The workshops are open to teachers and others who are interested in earth and environmental science instruction. Those who complete the course will receive 1.5 Continuing Education Units.

A course on "Earth and Environmental Science for Elementary Teachers" will be held from 9 a.m.-noon on June 16-20. The "Earth and Environmental Science for High School Teachers" class will be held from 1:30-4:30 p.m. on June 16-20. Cost is $135 per class. Class size is limited; early registration is suggested.

The workshops will follow the "North Carolina Earth & Environmental Science Standard Course of Study" and "National Science Education Standards." Participants will examine a host of topics, from plate tectonics to volcanoes, and will receive materials and ideas for demonstrations and field that can be applied to their own classrooms to meet state competency goals.

Both classes will be lead by Amanda Roberts, a regular course leader for the Blue Ridge Naturalist Program. Roberts has taught courses at Brevard College and Warren Wilson College.

For more information or to register, call the Blue Ridge Naturalist Program Director Mike McCreary at 828/251-6198.
