UNC Asheville Hosts the Regina Carter Quintet in Concert November 4;
Ensemble to Perform "I'll Be Seeing You: A Sentimental Journey"

Regina Carter
Regina Carter

Jazz violinist supreme Regina Carter brings her current ensemble to UNC Asheville's Lipinsky Auditorium for a performance of "I'll Be Seeing You: A Sentimental Journey" at 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4. The performance features intimate, acoustic arrangements of swing tunes spanning the 1920s-1940s.

Heralded by Time magazine as "a knockout violinist who leads a knockout band," Carter is one of the most significant musicians to emerge on the jazz scene in decades. But she isn't limited to jazz standards. Carter's repertoire ranges from R&B to East Indian to classical. Her unique style has attracted attention from the best in the business; she has collaborated with such legendary artists as Wynton Marsalis, Cassandra Wilson, Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Billy Joel and Dolly Parton, among others.

Carter began studying the Suzuki method of violin while in grade school. Later she honed her skills with the Detroit Civic Symphony Orchestra, the pop/funk band Brainstorm and the celebrated all-female Detroit collaborative Straight Ahead. A graduate of the esteemed New England Conservatory and Michigan's Oakland University, Carter relocated to New York in the early 1990s and quickly made a mark on the music world.

She has released six solo albums, including the 1997 recording "Something For Grace," which honored her mother and landed the number one spot in the violin category of Down Beat magazine's 46th Annual Critics Poll. Her Verve label debut, "Rhythms of the Heart," was chosen as one of Time magazine's top ten recordings of 1999. Her latest album, "I'll Be Seeing You: A Sentimental Journey," once again pays tribute to Carter's late mother. It features her mother's best loved songs.
General admission tickets are $28 or $6 to local students with ID. Tickets are now on sale. To reserve tickets by phone, call UNC Asheville's Highsmith University Union Box Office at 828/232-5000. For information about purchasing group tickets, call 828/251-6991.
