UNC Asheville to Offer On-line Lateral Entry Teaching CourseUNC Asheville will host a distance learning course designed for lateral entry teachers beginning in spring 2006. The three-credit hour course on Reading in the Content Area for Lateral Entry Teachers will be offered via teleconference and the Internet. Teleconference locations will be on the UNC Asheville campus, Mayland Community College in Spruce Pine and Murphy High School’s Cyber Campus. Classes will be held from 5:30- 9 p.m. on Thursdays, from January 12-March 9. Participants will learn strategies to prepare lessons that engage students in active learning, and will share learning strategies, research topics and reflect on how to integrate skills in the classroom. Applicants for a lateral entry teaching license must be employed by a North Carolina school system. They must also hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the subject area they are employed to teach or a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university and have satisfied Praxis II testing requirements for the license area. Tuition is $206.06 plus a $20 non-refundable application fee. In addition, students must have a computer with Microsoft Word and Internet access. Registration is open from December 12-January 10.
