UNC Asheville Building Projects Funded Through the 2000 Higher Education Bond Referendum

 * UNC Asheville’s new Science and Multimedia Building is the largest of the campus projects funded through the statewide 2000 Higher Education Bond Referendum. The $22.2 million project will house the departments of Chemistry, Biology and Multimedia Arts and Sciences. As a LEED certified project, the science building will employ environmentally sustainable construction methods and feature energy-efficient laboratories. UNC Asheville is one of 13 institutions in the nation to partner with the EPA-sponsored Labs for the 21st Century Pilot Program. Construction is scheduled to begin in summer 2005 with a projected completion date of summer 2007. The building designer is O'Brien/Atkins Associates of Raleigh and the Construction Management Company is Suitt Construction of Raleigh.

* Construction is under way on the new Carmichael Hall, a $5.5 million project for a classroom building funded through the bond referendum. The building is located adjacent to Zageir Hall and Belk Theatre. “Green” building design highlights include an innovative “green roof” plaza that minimizes rainwater runoff and provides a rooftop park setting, and the use of geothermal heat pumps for heating and cooling, which is both cost-effective and environmentally friendly.  Construction began in August 2004 with a projected completion date of fall 2005. Project architects are Pearce, Brinkley, Cease & Lee of Asheville and the General Contractor is H&M Construction of Asheville.

* Zageir Hall Renovation: This $2.5 million bond-funded project will provide interior renovation to Zageir Hall. Currently in the design phase, project construction will begin after the completion of Carmichael Hall, in order to provide classroom space during the Carmichael construction phase. Pearce Brinkley Cease & Lee of Asheville are the project architects. The schedule for completion is March 2006.

* Facilities Management Buildings: This $6.3 million, bond-funded project replaces the outdated physical plant building constructed in 1963 and now occupying key space in the heart of the student housing area. The new building, located at the edge of campus away from the academic and housing core incorporates a number of sustainable design features including passive solar, active solar, and geothermal heating and cooling. The project is one of the State of North Carolina’s Triangle J – High Performance Building Pilot Projects. The designer is Brown & Jones Architects of Raleigh. Construction is scheduled begin summer 2005 with a projected completion date of summer 2006.

* The Highsmith University Student Union was the first building to be completed using funds from the bond referendum. The $15.5 million renovation/expansion project added 46,000 square feet to the original Highsmith Center, built in1982. The building was completed in August 2004. The November 2000 bond referendum provided $11.5 million toward the project cost.
