Lule Rosenbaun as Rosita Torrent in "La Diva"

Telash, Asheville’s Spanish-language theatre company, will stage “La Diva” November 18-20 at 35below, beneath Asheville Community Theatre, downtown Asheville. Telash is a collaboration between UNC Asheville and the local Latino community. The performance will be presented entirely in Spanish. The event is free and open to the public.

Written by award-winning Spanish playwright Jeronimo Lopez Mozo, “La Diva” tells the story of Rosita Torrent, a classical actress faced with fading interest in her theater career. Desperate for attention, she sabotages a cabaret singer’s show and takes over the production. This one-woman show touches on the state of the arts and public commitment to live performance.

“La Diva” stars Lule Rosenbaun, Spanish lecturer at UNC Asheville. A graduate of the Conservatory Jolie Libois in Cordoba, Argentina, Rosenbaun spent three years in study at the theatrical company of the Province of Cordoba, one of the oldest and most prestigious theater companies in Argentina. The play is directed by Greta Trautmann, UNC Asheville associate professor of Spanish.

Telash was created as a forum for the UNC Asheville and local Latino communities to produce contemporary Spanish and Latin American plays. The theater company’s goal is to bridge the gaps between diverse Asheville communities through exploration and presentation of theater arts in Spanish. The production is sponsored by UNC Asheville’s Foreign Languages Department.

Curtain is at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, and Saturday, Nov. 19, with a performance at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20. Because of the intimate size of 35below, ticket reservations are strongly advised.

For more information or to reserve a free ticket, call Greta Trautmann, UNC Asheville associate professor of Spanish, at 828/251-6195, or Jeremy Carter, UNC Asheville senior Spanish major, at 828/253-3250.
