Center for Diversity Education Celebrates 10th Anniversary;
Ceremony, Exhibition and Dance Honors Former ASCORE Members
The Center for Diversity Education will celebrate
its 10th anniversary in November with a series of special events
including an awards ceremony, historical exhibition opening and a dance
on November 5-6. Events will honor the participants of the Asheville
Student Committee on Racial Equality (ASCORE), who spearheaded a series
of peaceful demonstrations, sit-ins and boycotts that led to the
desegregation of many Asheville establishments during the Civil Rights
Movement. Students from Stephens-Lee High, Allen High and Asheville
Catholic School formed ASCORE in 1959 and were active until 1965.
An awards ceremony honoring former ASCORE members
will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, at UNC Asheville’s Highsmith
University Union Alumni Hall. More than 30 ASCORE members will attend
the event. James Ferguson, founding member of ASCORE and leading civil
rights attorney, will give the keynote address.
Following the program, there will be an opening
reception for the historical exhibition on Buncombe County school
integration, “With All Deliberate Speed,” in UNC Asheville’s Highsmith
University Union Gallery. The exhibition will be on view through
November 30 and then will travel to local schools and businesses.
The awards ceremony and opening reception are free
and open to the public.
The Center’s 10th anniversary dance will be held at
8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at Stephens-Lee Recreation Center, 30 George
Washington Carver St., downtown Asheville. General admission is $25;
patron tickets are $100. More than 300 tickets have been sold; a limited
number remain and can be reserved by calling the Center at 828/232-5024.
The Center for Diversity Education works to
increase the ways in which diversity is discussed in the classroom, from
kindergarten through college. By focusing on ethnic, racial, cultural
and religious diversity through exhibits, road shows and staff
development programs, the Center encourages multiculturalism as a way to
enrich lives, organizations and the community.
