Sara Evans to Speak at UNCA on October 16;
Distinguished Scholar Will Explore History of Feminism in 20th Century
Sara Evans, the author of "Tidal Wave: How Women Changed America
at Century's End," will be joined by four community panelists at a
special event at 9:15 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, at UNC Asheville's Owen
Conference Center.
The program is sponsored by the UNC Asheville Women's Studies Program
and Holy Ground, an Asheville non-profit organization, and is funded by
the North Carolina Humanities Council. It is free and open to the public.
Evans, the Distinguished McKnight University Professor of History at
the University of Minnesota, will explore the history of feminism from the
perspectives of social movements and policy. Her presentation will include
her research on how women have shaped and re-shaped public life, and what
is unique about the "second wave" of feminism.
Following Evan's presentation, four panelists will draw from their
expertise and personal experiences to connect Evan's insights to the local
community, region and state. The panelists include Sarah Judson, UNC Asheville professor of
history; April Spencer, Asheville High School social studies teacher;
Kathleen Balough, western region director for the NC Council for
Women/Domestic Violence and President of the League of Women Voters; and
State Representative Susan Fisher. Pamela Nickless, UNC Asheville
economics professor, will serve as moderator.
Evans has taught history at the University of Minnesota since 1976 and
is the author of five books including, "The New Left: Born for
Liberty."
