UNC Asheville Hosts Talk on Asheville's Civil War History

EVENT CANCELED -- UNC Asheville will host a talk on "Asheville at the End of the War" by John Inscoe, professor of history at the University of Georgia, at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1, in UNC Asheville's Highsmith University Union Mountains Suite. The event is free and open to the public.

Inscoe will focus on the political and social climate in Asheville at the end of the Civil War. He will discuss the Battle of Asheville and the occupation of Asheville by Union troops led by General Stoneman.

"Many people aren't familiar with the story of the Battle of Asheville," said Inscoe. "It is an interesting one. Asheville was a Confederate stronghold throughout the war, so Union occupation really disrupted the town."

Inscoe is the author of "Mountain Masters: Slavery and the Sectional Crisis in Western North Carolina and co-author of "The Heart of Confederate Appalachia: The Civil War in Western North Carolina." Inscoe has edited several volumes, including topics on Georgia race relations, James Oglethorpe, the Appalachians and race in the 19th century and southern Unionists during the Civil War.
