On Wednesday, Aug. 25, the UNC Asheville Board of Trustees, faculty, staff and students broke ground for the new
$5.5 million Carmichael
Hall classroom building. The 31,855-square-foot facility, which is funded through the 2000 statewide Higher Education Bond Referendum, is slated for completion in August 2005.
Carmichael Hall houses the departments
of History, Foreign Languages, Philosophy and Classics and the Women's Studies, Arts & Ideas and Humanities programs.
The new building will have several environmentally sustainable features, including a "green roof" that will help
reduce the energy needed to heat and cool the structure, and geothermal heat pumps, which employ the earth's near-constant temperature in the heating and cooling process.
