N.C. Center for Creative Retirement Offers Leadership Training for Older Persons;
Course Funded by Grant from the National Council on Aging

The North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement (NCCCR) was recently awarded a $12,500 grant from the National Council on the Aging in partnership with MetLife Foundation to fund Leadership Training for Older Persons. This free, six-week course is designed to teach leadership skills to underserved and minority adults ages 50 and older who reside in Buncombe, Henderson, Madison and Transylvania counties. NCCCR was one of only eight community organizations in the nation to receive a grant.

"LTOP is designed to help people gain skills to become stronger advocates for older persons in the community," said project coordinator Jeanie Martin. "Participants will learn how to effectively plan discussions, lead groups, handle difficult people, lobby elected officials and speak in public," said Martin.

The course was offered once before in 2002. Graduates from that class have since served on local boards and advisory groups, publicly advocated for the needs and concerns of seniors in their communities, and volunteered in various community projects, said Martin.

Leadership Training for Older Persons will meet from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesdays September 7-October 12, on the UNC Asheville campus. The course is free and open to adults ages 50 and older, but preference will be given to underserved and minority residents of Buncombe, Henderson, Madison, and Transylvania counties. The application deadline is Monday, Aug. 16.

For more information or to request an application, call NCCCR at 828/251-6140.
