UNC Asheville Names Distinguished Staff Members of the Year

The 2004 UNC Asheville Distinguished Staff Member of the Year awards were recently presented to Melissa Acker, landscape director and grounds crew manager, and Steve Honeycutt, university budget officer. The annual awards, based in part on faculty and staff nominations, are given to staff members who have gone beyond his or her job and who significantly contributes to the campus community.

Acker, of Fletcher, writes grants for campus beautification projects, serves on the N.C. Arboretum Board and is a participant in the Clean Reed Creek program. One nomination statement said, "I can’t think of anyone that has a more positive affect and influence on the campus."

Honeycutt, an Asheville native, created the annual "Move In Day," which brings together staff and faculty volunteers to assist students and their families with moving into the residence halls each fall. He was also instrumental in founding the Chancellor’s Staff Advisory Council. Honeycutt is also active in the community as a Bele Chere and Downtown After Dark volunteer.
