UNCA to Hold Winter Continuing Education Classes

UNC Asheville’s Special Academic Programs will offer winter continuing education classes in investing and Russian language. Classes are open to all interested students and will meet on the UNCA campus.

The four-week course "Educating Investors Through the 21st Century" will meet from 6-8 p.m. Tuesdays beginning February 10. This course will offer easy, practical approaches to financial planning. Topics will include the basic principles of successful investing, investment options and monitoring wealth. Instructor Joseph Kiely has taught college-level investment courses for more than 12 years. He also a financial columnist for the Greenville, N.C. "The Daily Reflector" newspaper. The first class is free; cost for the final three classes is $95.

Beginning Russian I, "An Introduction to Russia, the Russians and Their Language," will be offered from 6-8 p.m. Tuesdays from January 20-April 20. This ten-week class will begin with a short review of Russian history, geography and culture. An introduction to the Russian sound and writing system will also be included. Instructor Fred Turner, a graduate of the Institute of Advanced Russian and Duke University, has taught Russian at the college level. He has spent more than seven years living and working with Russian people. Cost for the course is $50 plus a required textbook, which is available at the UNCA Bookstore.

Turner will also teach Beginning Russian II from 6-8 p.m. for Thursdays from January 22-April 22. Students who enroll in this ten-week class must have taken Beginning Russian I or be familiar with the Russian sound and writing system as well as be able to conjugate verbs in the first conjugation. Cost for the course is $50 plus a required textbook, which is available at the UNCA Bookstore.
