Local Sculptor Presents at Regional Conference,
Holds Ongoing Exhibits

"Shelter" by Dan Millspaugh on view at Bruce Drysdale Elementary

UNCA art professor and sculptor Dan Millspaugh recently gave a presentation at the 2003 Tri State Sculptors Southeastern College Art Conference in Raleigh. His presentation focused on British sculptor David Nash and his spring residency at the Penland School of Crafts. Millspaugh and his UNCA art students joined other regional colleges to assist Nash with creating a new body of work. Students also participated in ongoing discussions with Nash about the creative process and posted daily online journals of their experiences.

Millspaugh, a noted sculptor, currently has nine ongoing exhibitions on view around the state. These include pieces at the UNC Botanical Garden in Chapel Hill, the Moorings Gallery in Winston-Salem and Nash Square in Raleigh. Locally, he has work on view in downtown Waynesville’s "Streetscapes" public art exhibition, Henderson County Arts Council’s outdoor sculpture exhibition at Bruce Drysdale Elementary School and at the Black Mountain invitational outdoor sculpture exhibition at Black Mountain Iron Works.

Millspaugh joined the UNCA art department in 1981. Previously, he taught at Miami-Dade Community College and Ransom Everglades School in Miami. He received the UNC Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1999. Most recently, he was named the first recipient of UNCA’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship or Creative Expression.
