UNCA Announces Fall Music SeasonUNC Asheville’s Music Department will sponsor 12 evening and weekend concerts for the public during the fall season. Events are open to the public and are free or carry a small admission fee. Turtle Island String Quartet will hold a free workshop on "The Art of Groove" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, in Lipinsky Auditorium. A second workshop on "It’s About Time" will be held at 12:20 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, in Lipinsky Auditorium. Since its inception in 1985, Turtle Island String Quartet has been a singular force in creating bold new trends in chamber music for strings. The workshops are being held in conjunction with the Turtle Island String Quartet’s concert at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, in Lipinsky Auditorium. New UNCA Music Department faculty member Hwa-Jin Kim will perform a piano recital featuring the works of Haydn, Beethoven, Liszt and Bartok at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, in Lipinsky Auditorium. Kim will perform on a Steinway Concert Grand piano provided by the company. Admission is $5 at the door. Flutist Judi Lampert, a UNCA Music Department faculty member, will be joined in concert by guitarist Roger Allen Cope at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, in the Humanities Lecture Hall. They will perform works by Telemann, Giuliani, La Montaine, Bartok, Ibert and Robert Bease. Admission is $5 at the door. The UNCA Jazz Ensembles, directed by David Wilken, will present vocal and instrumental selections at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, at Lipinsky Auditorium. Admission is $5 at the door. The UNCA Percussion Ensemble will perform percussion works under the direction of Byron Hedgepeth at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, at Lipinsky Auditorium. Admission is $5 at the door. The UNCA Concert Band and the UNCA String Ensembles will perform in concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9, at Lipinsky Auditorium. Admission is $5 at the door. The University Singers will be joined by the University String Quartet for a concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, at the Basilica of St. Lawrence in downtown Asheville. A donation will be requested at the door. The always popular UNCA Community Jazz band, made up of UNCA students and local community members, will perform under the direction of Lloyd Weinberg at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, at Lipinsky Auditorium. Admission is $5 at the door. Under the direction of David Wilken, the UNCA Jazz Ensembles will present vocal and instrumental selections at 7:30 p..m Thursday, Dec. 4, at Lipinsky Auditorium. Admission is $5 at the door. UNCA’s annual Holiday Concert, featuring holiday music performed by UNCA choral and instrumental ensembles, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, at Lipinsky Auditorium. The University Singers will perform under the direction of Chuck Taft and the instrumental groups will perform under the direction of Earl Sachais and Vance Reese. Admission is $5 at the door. Featuring music by the 18-piece UNCA Community Jazz Band, the annual Big Band Swing Dance will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, in the Justice Center. A donation of $5 will be requested at the door. Seven evening and weekend performances are scheduled for the spring concert season. Season tickets for all fall and spring concerts are available for $35 at the door of any event.
