UNCA Music Department Continues Fall Concert Season

UNC Asheville’s Music Department continues its fall concert season with six performances in November. All concerts are open to the public.

** Flutist Judi Lampert will present an afternoon of chamber music at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, in Lipinsky Hall room 018. Lampert, a UNCA adjunct music professor, will be joined by classical guitarist Roger Allen Cope, pianist Mary Johnson, and fellow UNCA adjunct music professor, percussionist Byron Hedgepeth. Lampert played flute and piccolo with the Illinois Symphony for 20 years. She has been a soloist with several orchestras in Illinois and North Carolina and has performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Chicago’s Orchestra Hall and at National Flute Conventions. Admission is $5 (UNCA students admitted free with ID).

** The UNCA University Singers and the UNCA String Quartet will perform in concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, in the Humanities Lecture Hall. The varied program includes music from the Baroque period to Broadway hits. A special highlight will be a performance of Vivaldi’s "Gloria" with soloists Kristen Mills and Martha Fawbush. Admission is $5 (UNCA students admitted free with ID).

** Under the direction of Jacqueline Mattingly, the UNCA Concert Band and String Ensembles will take center stage at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, in Lipinsky Auditorium. The String Ensemble will perform selections by Percy Grainger, G.F. Handel and Ralph Vaughn Williams. The Concert Band will perform selections by Francis McBeth, Ralph Vaughn Williams and "A Bernstein Tribute" adapted by Clare Grundman. Admission is $5 (UNCA students admitted free with ID).

** Under the direction of Byron Hedgepeth, adjunct assistant professor of music, the UNCA Percussion Ensemble will perform in concert at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, in Lipinsky Auditorium. Concert highlights will include a "March for Two Pairs of Kettledrums," a timpani duet featuring John Haynes and Michael Horgan. This piece was first performed by the Philidor brothers for King Louis XIV at Versailles in 1683. Admission is $5 (UNCA students admitted free with ID).

** The UNCA Ebony Gospel Choir will perform in concert at 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, in Lipinsky Auditorium. The Choir will present a program of contemporary gospel music featuring works by John P. Kee and Richard Smallwood. The choir performs under the direction of Samuel Williams. A donation of $5 is requested at the door.

** The popular UNCA Community Jazz Band will perform at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24, in Lipinsky Auditorium. UNCA students and Asheville-area community members perform under the direction of Lloyd Weinberg. The concert will showcase a variety of musical styles, including arrangements of "Blues in the Night," "Moonlight in Vermont" and "Watermelon Man." A donation of $5 is requested at the door.
