Ann Clark Bass, a Pennsylvania educator now living in Asheville, has been selected as the new director of the N.C. Center for Creative Retirement's College for Seniors. Cissie Stevens, who served as the director for 12 years, retired this fall.
Bass served in several capacities during her 20-year career at the University of Scranton. From 1987 to 1998 she was the assistant dean/director of credit program for the university's Dexter Hanley College. "I had the pleasure of working with adult students, including retirees 60 and older, who were pursuing undergraduate degrees and professional certification. I developed a deep respect for the minds and experiences of older students," Bass said.
Bass was selected for her new position from among 56 applicants and seven finalists by the seven-member search committee, chaired by Ron Manheimer, executive director of the N.C. Center for Creative Retirement.
"We were impressed by Ann's knowledge and experience in the field of lifelong learning," Manheimer said. "She understands the enthusiasm that brings older learners onto the college campus and their willingness to help create learning communities among peers."
Bass and her husband moved to Asheville in 1998. Most recently she spent two years working with Givens Estates. She holds a master's in related arts from Truman State University, a bachelor's degree in music education from Marywood University, and did advanced study in organizational development at the University of Scranton.
The College for Seniors was established in 1988 as program of the N.C. Center for Creative Retirement, located on the UNC Asheville campus. Each year, some 800 members take a range of courses developed and taught by their peers and by UNCA faculty members. The courses, offered at UNCA and several community locations, have no tests or grades and are open to those 50 years or older.
