UNCA to Host Talk on Eastern African Field Work Oct. 22

UNC Asheville and the American Institute of Archaeology will present a talk on "When Men are Women: The Construction of Gender Among Gabra Camel Herders of East Africa" by John Wood at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, in UNCA’s Owen Conference Center. The talk is free and open to the public.

Wood, UNCA assistant sociology professor, is a cultural anthropologist and former newspaper reporter who has worked in Africa on and off for 15 years. His talk draws on more than two years spent living with camel-herding Gabra nomads of the Kenya-Ethiopia borderlands. "When Men Are Women," Wood’s recent book, is a study of Gabra manhood.

For more information, call Dorothy Dvorsky Rohner, UNCA assistant classics professor, at 828/251-6295.
