UNCA's Third Annual S. Dexter Squibb Lecture Series to be Held Oct. 30-31

Nancy H. Kolodny, Wellesley College chemistry professor, will discuss "Biochemistry for the Millennium" at UNCA’s third annual S. Dexter Squibb Lecture Series Oct. 30-31, in UNCA’s Rhoades/Robinson Hall room 125. Events are free and open to the public.

Kolodny’s will discuss "Ancient Microbes throughTwenty-First Century Eyes" at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 30. This lecture will cover cyanobacteria and new information about gene regulation leading from the sensing of environmental signals to the regulation of enzymatic activities.

At 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31, Kolodny will discuss "Looking into the Eye with MRI." She will describe Proton Magnetic Resonance Imaging and how it is used for clinical diagnosis and basic scientific research.

Kolodny, Wellesly College chemistry professor and Nellie Zuckerman Cohen and Anne Cohen Heller professor of Health Sciences, is an internationally recognized authority on nuclear magnetic resonance and its applicaiton to problems in medicine and biology.

The S. Dexter Squibb Endowed Distinguished Lecureship brings well-known scientists to the UNCA campus to give public and campus lectures, and meet with UNCA students, faculty and high school science students. The lecture series honors S. Dexter Squibb, former UNCA Chemistry Department Chair. Squibb joined the faculty in 1964 and was instrumental in developing UNCA’s Chemistry Department into a certified four-year program. Winner of numerous prestigious chemistry awards, Squibb has written 13 textbooks and received seven National Science Foundation grants.
