| For Immediate Release November 9, 2000 Theatre UNCA's Tanglewood
Children's Theatre Presents Theatre UNCA’s presents its Tanglewood Children’s Theatre production of Laurie Brooks Gollobin’s "Selkie" Nov. 16-19, in UNCA’s Carol Belk Theatre. Directed by guest director Olivia Woodford, artistic director of Asheville’s Healing Theatre, "Selkie" is a magical tale based on traditional Scottish folklore concerning seals who once a year shed their pelts and become women. One transformed woman catches the attention of man who steals her sealskin, forcing her to stay on land with him. The play relates the story of the selkie woman who continues to long for the sea, her husband and their adolescent daughter. "The best plays are one's that can appeal to the child, the adolescent, and the adult in each of us," Woodford says. "Children will be drawn into this fairy tale and will desire to see the selkie free again. Adolescents will relate to the daughter’s love story and longing to find her place in the world. Adults will relate to the unobtainable desire to capture a magical or beautiful moment forever." Curtain is at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday with a 4 p.m. matinee on Saturday and a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday. Tickets are $9 general admission, $7 senior citizens and $5 students. Because of the intimate size of UNCA’s Carol Belk Theatre and often heavy demand for tickets, advance purchase is strongly advised. Tickets may be purchased by phone with Visa or MasterCard by calling 828/232-2291 between 10 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays or 90 minutes before curtain in the box office.
