UNCA Knowledge Bowl Holds Final Rounds Nov. 4

The final rounds of the 33rd Annual UNCA Knowledge Bowl gets under way at 9 a.m. Saturday, November 4, at Karpen Hall on the UNCA campus. Asheville, Brevard, Crest, East Rowan, Enka, Hayesville, Shelby and Wilkes-Central high schools advanced out of 19 high schools to compete in the head to head double elimination round. The winning team receives $400 and the opportunity to move on to a national competition.

Each high school sends teams of six students to answer an array of questions written by UNCA faculty members on topics ranging from science and mathematics to history and literature. More than 40 UNCA faculty members have volunteered for the event.

If you’d like to try some arm chair competition, sample questions are listed below.

What was the first civilization to develop writing?
Answer -- Sumerian (in about 3500 B.C.)

Which endocrine gland, located at the base of the hypothalamus, produces growth hormone?
Answer -- The Pituitary gland

Two liters contain how many cubic centimeters?
Answer -- 2000

What is the smallest positive angle for which the tangent function is undefined?
Answer -- "pi over 2" or "90 degrees"
