Dr. Richard Maas

Richard Preston Maas

Rick Maas is Professor of Environmental Studies and Co-Director of the Environmental Quality Institute. Rick has received over 200 grants and contracts, totally more then $5,600,000 to support his research and service activities. This effort has resulted in over 250 technical reports and many publications in such journals as "Journal of Environmental Health," "Journal of Environmental Quality," and "Environmental Health Perspectives." Dr. Maas is sought after nationally as an expert witness from California to Florida to New York. He has been an invited speaker at many conferences and has spoken on regional and national television.

Most of Rick's research focus has been on water quality, especially as it pertains to the presence of lead. Often his focus is that of sharing his research expertise in ways that are a public service. Recently he has become a leader in the investigation and prevention or arsenic exposure from pressure-treated lumber. Rick is concerned that this is a critical period in human history as to whether we are successful in preserving our environment without a total collapse of it. Special recent interests are those of new and promising industries that are able to be economically successful, while making major environmental favorable decisions.

Recycling Tip
Less energy is used to make paper when recycled wastepaper is used.

Safety Tip
Don't over-exercise. For a maximum, injury-free workout, rest at least 24 hours after heavy muscle strain. Stagger workouts between heavy and light strain. For example, alternate weight training with biking.

Energy Tip
If you have torchiere fixtures with halogen lamps, consider replacing them with compact fluorescent torchieres, which use 60-80% less energy and can produce more light.
