Ronald J. Manheimer
Ron Manheimer is the Executive Director of the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement. Before arriving in Asheville, Ron was a Director at The National Council on the Aging in Washington, D.C. Dr. Manheimer is internationally recognized as a leader in the general field of lifelong learning. He successfully led the fundraising effort that raised $4.3 million for the building of the Reuter Center. His writings have appeared in the popular press (e.g. Wall Street Journal) and in many highly regarded journals, such as The Gerontologist, Research in Aging, Education Gerontology, and The Journal of Aging Studies. Totally, Ron has about 50 publications. He has lectured internationally at places including the University of Alicante (Spain), Kyoto (Japan), University of Regina (Canada), Jerusalem (Israel), and Stockholm (Sweden). Ron's scholarly activities and program development has been funded by over 30 successful funded proposals from such foundations as the National Endowment of the Humanities, The National Endowment for the Arts, and the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation.

Ron Manheimer is educated as a philosopher with a Ph.D. from the Board of Studies in History of Consciousness, University of California, Santa Cruz. His first book, Kierkegaard As Educator, explored the Danish philosopher and theologian’s stages of human development. Other books include "A Map to the End of Time: Wayfarings with Friends and Philosophers," "Older Americans Almanac: A Reference Work on Seniors in the United States," "The Second Middle Age: Looking Differently at Life Beyond 50," and "Older Adult Education: A Guide to Research, Policies and Programs." Currently he is writing a book on philosophers’ autobiographies. Besides his ongoing teaching at UNCA, Ron Manheimer has taught at Wayne State University, the University of California, Santa Cruz, San Diego State University, Evergreen State College, and the Smithsonian.

2004 Dorr Endowed Lecture
Samuel A. Floyd Jr. director emeritus and consultant for the Center for Black Music Research at Columbia College in Chicago, will discuss "InterArts Inquiry and the Black Expressive Arts" at noon Tuesday, April 6, in Lipinsky Auditorium. Talk by Reginald Gibbons and Alan Shapiro
Respected poet-translators Reginald Gibbons and Alan Shapiro will discuss "Ancient Greek Tragedy in Our World," at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 10, in Laurel Forum, Karpen Hall. Gibbons is an English professor at Northwestern University and is the translator of the Greek works "Bakkhai" and "Anitgone." "Vincent" Tickets on Sale
The one-man play "Vincent" will be staged at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 13, in Lipinsky Auditorium. "Vincent," which was written by "Star Trek" legend Leonard Nimoy, will be performed by veteran actor Jim Jarrett. Tickets go on sale March 29 and are $6 for students; $12 for faculty, staff and College for Seniors; and $15 general admission. Call 232-5000 to order your tickets by phone between 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. or stop by the Student Activities Office, second floor Dining Hall.
