COMING UP

Center for Jewish Studies to Host Talk with Rodger Kamenetz
The Center for Jewish Studies will host a talk by acclaimed Jewish author Rodger Kamenetz at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 18, in the Reuter Center. Kamenetz, a professor of English and religious studies at Louisiana State University, is internationally known for his work on Jewish-Buddhist dialogue. He is the author of several books including "The Jew in the Lotus." This is a groundbreaking account of his experience as an American Jew invited to Dharamsala by the Dalai Lama to discuss how the Jewish experience of spiritual survival in exile might be helpful to Tibetans. Third Annual Parsons' Lecture Set for March 18
Renowned mathematician John H. Conway will deliver the third annual Parsons' Lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 18, in Lipinsky Auditorium. Conway will discuss "On the Number of Groups of a Given Order." Conway, a graduate of Cambridge University, is a professor of mathematics at Princeton University. He has completed revolutionary work in number theory, game theory, coding theory and tiling. Conway discovered one of the largest finite groups of symmetries known to man, now called the Conway group. He also invented the "Game of Life," a computer simulation where checker-like objects replicate themselves under certain rules and form complex patterns on a grid. Questions? Bruce Wood Dance Company
The Bruce Wood Dance Company will take center stage at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 23, and Wednesday, March 24, at the Diana Wortham Theatre at Pack Place in downtown Asheville. The event is sponsored by UNCA's Cultural and Special Events Committee and Diana Wortham Theatre. Tickets are available now in 242 Dining Hall. Tickets are $6 for UNCA students (1 per I.D.), $10 children ages 12 and younger when purchased with other UNCA discount tickets, $12 faculty/staff/College for Seniors (2 per I.D.) and $25 regular admission when purchased on campus with other UNCA discount tickets. Summer Science Program in England
UNCA will conduct a summer comparative science education program in England from June 30-July 27, 2004. The program is held in cooperation with the University of Bath Department of Education. Anyone who is or has been involved with K-12 science education is eligible. The $2,500 fee covers tuition, ground transportation and private housing on the University of Bath campus. Registration will remain open until the course is filled, but participants are encouraged to register prior to March 15, 2004. For more information or to enroll, contact Dr. Gary Miller at 232-5184.
