UNCA FACULTY SCHOLAR

This is the ninth in the second series of informal profiles of UNCA's many noted faculty scholars. Written by John Stevens, chief research officer, each of the weekly profiles will highlight the scholarly accomplishments and interests of faculty colleagues. We hope that you will find these profiles of interest as we celebrate the intellectual vigor that is at work on our campus.

Dr. Chuck Bennett
Dr. Chuck Bennett

Charles A. Bennett, Jr.
Chuck Bennett, Professor in Physics, arrived at UNCA over 20 years ago. Chuck is nationally recognized as an expert in several fundamental areas of optics. He has collaborated extensively with Oak Ridge National Laboratory since 1983 and currently is an Adjunct Research and Development Associate in their Advanced Laser and Optical Technologies Group. He recently collaborated on a project that developed a laser-aided plasma diagnostic for the JT-60U fusion reactor in Japan.

Almost ten years ago Chuck was one of the earlier individuals to explore the use of the Web to enhance teaching in the classroom. This has led to the development of several on-line systems that have been supported by Cisco Systems and are widely used. Dr. Bennett has been invited to become co-author with Raymond Serway for the next edition of "College Physics," a major textbook used extensively in the Physics
community. Chuck is also at the early stage of writing an upper level textbook on optics.
