This is the fourth in the second series of informal profiles of UNCA's many noted faculty scholars. Written by Dr. John Stevens, director of the Office of Sponsored Scholarship and Programs, each of the weekly profiles will highlight the scholarly accomplishments and interests of faculty colleagues. We hope that you will find these profiles of interest as we celebrate the intellectual vigor that is at work on our campus.

Sandra P. Byrd
Sandra Byrd is Assistant Professor in the Department of Education with responsibility for middle school social studies. Sandra came to UNCA in 1985 as a seasoned teacher having taught in public schools in various cities throughout North Carolina, including Charlotte, Winston-Salem, Raleigh, and here in Asheville. She is quite active in our community with membership on several boards including the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, Asheville City Schools Foundation Board, and the Education Coalition Board.

Sandra Byrd has been the recipient and/or involved in 15 funding awards amounting to over $500,000. Her focus is developing programs locally and statewide that teach moral courage and civic responsibility to middle school and high school students. She is also particularly interested in researching the role of the teacher in improved student achievement.

COMING UP

Fall Open House
The Admissions Office will host an open house for transfer students and high school students and their families from 8:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, in the Health & Fitness Center. Events will include student-led campus tours and sessions on admission, academic and extracurricular programs, scholarships and other financial aid. Call the Admissions Office at 251-6481 for more information or to register.

Family Business Forum to Host Workshop
The Family Business Forum will host a program with leading family business expert John L. Ward from 8:30 a.m.-noon Tuesday, Oct. 21, at the Grove Park Inn Resort. Ward will discuss "Perpetuating the Family Business: The Ultimate Challenge." An optional buffet lunch will immediately follow the program.
Registration for the workshop is required. The program is open to forum members and their guests; a limited number of seats are available for family business owners interested in membership. For more information or to register, call Richard Lasher, at 251-6797, voice mail box 8003.

Campuswide Power Outage
A campuswide power outage has been scheduled for November 28 by Facilities Management in order to finish work on the new electrical switch gear. The work is part of the ongoing upgrade to the campus electrical distribution system. It is essential that the work be completed before onset of very cold weather. The outage will begin early in the morning and should be completed by 2 p.m., if problems do not arise. Questions?

UNCA Knowledge Bowl Volunteers Needed
The UNCA Knowledge Bowl will be held on October 25 and November 1 in Karpen Hall. Special Academic Programs is seeking volunteer timekeepers and scorekeepers for both dates. On October 25, volunteers are needed from 9:30 a.m.-noon or 1:30-4 p.m. On November 1, volunteers are needed from 8:30-11:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m-1 p.m. and 2-4 p.m. Volunteers will receive Knowledge Bowl water bottles. Continuing Education Classes in Investing, Russian and LSAT Prep Offered
Registration is now open for fall continuing education classes in investing, Russian language and culture and LSAT prep beginning this month. Classes are open to all interested students and are offered through Special Academic Programs. To register or for more information, contact Special Academic Programs Office by phone at 251-6558, by e-mail or online.

Call for Weekend Events Funding Proposals
