Philosophy Lecture Series December 2;
Cynthia Gadol to Lead Discussion on Learning Rediscovered
Cynthia Gadol, a teacher at Thomas Jefferson Classical
Academy in Mooresboro, N.C., will lead a discussion on "The Lost
Tools of Learning Rediscovered" at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 2. The
talk will be held at UNC Asheville's Kellogg Center, 11 Broyles Rd.,
Hendersonville. The event is free and open to the public. A donation
of $5 will be suggested at the door to support student scholarships.

Poisoning Prevention Program to Hold Safety Workshops in Spanish
UNC Asheville's Lead Poisoning Prevention Program will
hold two lead paint safety workshops in Spanish in December. The
first workshop will be held 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, at El
Centro, 505B Brookside Camp Rd., Hendersonville. An additional
workshop will be held 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, at Calvary Baptist
Church, 531 Haywood Rd., Asheville. Both are free and open to the
public and will be conducted completely in Spanish. Registration
deadline is December 1.

School of the Arts Symphony
Orchestra to Perform in Asheville
The University of North Carolina School of the Arts'
Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Chancellor John Mauceri, will
perform Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, at
the Heritage Ballroom, at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville. The
concert is free and open to the public.

UNC Asheville Seniors
Hold Photography Exhibition
"Insight," an exhibition featuring 28 photographs by
UNC Asheville seniors Rebecca Harmon and Katie Murray, will be on
view November 14-December 2 at UNC Asheville's S. Tucker Cook
Gallery. An opening reception will be held 6-9 p.m. on Friday, Nov.
14, in the gallery. The show is the culmination of Harmon's and
Murray's work toward bachelor of art degrees at UNC Asheville.

UNC Asheville Hosts Portrait
Exhibit by North Carolina Inmates
Since 1998, UNC Asheville has offered college classes
at four regional correctional facilities. Inmate students have
studied meteorology, psychology, public speaking and art, among
other classes. The federally funded program allows inmates to earn
college credits and begin building a transcript. To participate,
inmates must be 25 years old or younger, within five years of
release, have a high school diploma or GED, be able to read at a
10th-grade level, and they must not have committed violent crimes

Street Computers Donate Computers to UNC Asheville
Guadalupe Chavarria II, co-owner of Vigné Restaurant at
125 South Lexington Ave. in downtown Asheville, recently partnered
with Charlotte Street Computers to donate five reconditioned
computers to UNC Asheville. The computers will be placed in UNC
Asheville residence hall computer labs for use by students.

20 black-and-white photographs by UNC Asheville senior Emma Sherman
Kitson, will be on view from November 21 to December 2 at UNC

The view captured Frank Harmon's imagination. Standing
on a grassy bluff overlooking the French Broad River, the third

become UNC Asheville's Craft Campus.

Dickert to Hold Ceramics Exhibition
"What You Will," featuring more than 40 pieces by UNC
Asheville senior Will Dickert, will be on view from November 14 to
December 1 in UNC Asheville’s Highsmith University Union Gallery.
The exhibition is a collection of Dickert’s work towards a bachelor
of arts degree from UNC Asheville. An opening reception will be held
from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 14, in the gallery. The exhibition
and opening reception are free and open to the public.

concert season with three performances in November, ranging from
jazz to chamber music. The concerts feature student musicians under

Restaurants Join Together for Harvest Bounty Shared Meal; Informed
Consumerism is the Focus of Classes
In this UNC Asheville chemistry class, mixing bowls and
measuring spoons have replaced beakers and Bunsen burners. The
introductory science course is part of the University's innovative
"Food for Thought" cluster of classes, focusing on food information,
consumerism, nutrition and health through courses in chemistry,
biology, economics, sociology and health and wellness.

Selected for Greensboro's "One City, One Book" Program
This fall, thousands of people in Greensboro, N.C.,
will read and discuss "The Pleasure Was Mine," a novel by Tommy
Hays, noted Asheville author and UNC Asheville's Great Smokies
Writing Program director. A host of citywide events have been
planned in conjunction with the reading, including a reception,

Virginia Derryberry, a noted painter and UNC Asheville
art professor, will hold a solo exhibition of recent work at the

UNC Asheville Craft Campus Director and noted artist
Brent Skidmore was recently selected to exhibit new works at the
Mint Museum of Craft & Design in Charlotte. The exhibition,
"Possibilities: Rising Stars of Contemporary Craft in North
Carolina," features work by six craft artists chosen for the quality

Fiske Guide to Colleges;
University Named Best Buy for 15 Consecutive Years
UNC Asheville continues to stand with some of the
nation's finest colleges in popular college rankings. The annual
"Fiske Guide to Colleges" released its 2009 list of Best Buys of
American and Canadian colleges earlier this month. UNC Asheville is
alone among public colleges in Western North Carolina to earn a spot
on the list. It is the 15th consecutive year that UNC Asheville has
been named a Best Buy.

Book Examining Religion in the South
Rodger M. Payne, UNC Asheville associate professor
of religious studies, recently completed work on a new book entitled
"Southern Crossroads: Perspectives on Religion and Culture." The
University Press of Kentucky released the 390-page book on May 23.

UNC Asheville Names First Cary
Caperton Owen Distinguished Professor in Economics; Professor's Work
will Focus on American Poverty Courses, Research
UNC Asheville Economics Professor Joseph M. Sulock has
been named the University's first Cary Caperton Owen Distinguished
Professor in Economics. The distinguished professorship was
established in October 2007 in honor of Cary Owen, who is known
throughout the state as a remarkable champion for public education.
It is especially fitting that the distinguished professorship is in
the field of economics; Owen was one of the first women to major in
economics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

ceremony today for the North Carolina Center for Health & Wellness,
which will be the new home for a unique academic and outreach

UNC Asheville Professor Kevin
Moorhead Honored for Teaching Excellence by UNC Board of Governors
One of UNC Asheville's most respected professors, Kevin
Moorhead, was named today as a recipient of the Award for Excellence
in Teaching from the University of North Carolina's Board of
Governors. Moorhead, professor and chair of environmental studies,
was nominated by a committee of UNC Asheville faculty. He will
receive a commemorative bronze medallion and a $7,500 cash prize at
a ceremony at UNC Chapel Hill next month.
