UNC Asheville's Concerts on
the Quad Gets Jazzy with the Capital Messengers
The Capital Messengers will swing into the limelight at
7 p.m. Monday, July 13, as the fifth installment in UNC Asheville's
Concerts on the Quad summer music series. A unit of the 257th U.S.
Army Band based in Washington, D.C., the Capital Messengers is a
traditional jazz team directed by Sergeant Jamal Brown. The event is
free and open to the public. »

UNC Asheville Board of Trustees to Meet July 7
UNC Asheville's Board of Trustees will hold a special
meeting from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 7, at UNC Asheville's
Phillips Hall, room 117. The purpose of the meeting is to elect
officers for 2009-10. Portions of the meeting may be closed to the
public under the provision of the North Carolina Open Meetings Act.

UNC Asheville Earns Top Spot in Fiske Guide to Colleges;
University Named Best Buy for 16 Consecutive Years
As the 2010 college rankings begin to roll in, UNC
Asheville continues to stand with some of the nation's finest
colleges. The annual "Fiske Guide to Colleges" released its 2010
list of Best Buys of American and Canadian colleges earlier this
month. UNC Asheville is alone among public colleges in Western North
Carolina to earn a spot on the list. It is the 16th consecutive year
that UNC Asheville has been named a Best Buy.

UNC Asheville's Concerts on the Quad Hosts an Evening of WNC Music
and Stories
UNC Asheville's Concerts on the Quad summer music
series will continue Monday, July 6 with an evening of stories and
music, highlighting the two earliest cultures of Western North
Carolina. Noted Cherokee storyteller Lloyd Arneach will share his
traditional stories at 7 p.m. Popular mountain musicians Laura
Boosinger, Josh Goforth and Raymond McLain will play at 8 p.m. The
event is free and open to the public.

UNC Asheville Hosts Mixed Media Exhibition by Asheville Artist
Norbert Irvine
"Norbert W. Irvine: Reflective Iridescences on
Canvas," an exhibition of some 12 mixed media pieces by Asheville
artist Norbert Irvine, will be on view at UNC Asheville's Highsmith
University Union Gallery July-August 6. The show features Irvine's
work, which incorporate prismatic papers, glitter, acrylic,
opalescent colors, permanent inks and commercial holographic paper.
A reception and artist talk will be held at noon Monday, July 13, in

UNC Asheville Offers Distance Learning Courses for Lateral Entry
Teachers
UNC Asheville and A-B Technical Community College will
host two distance learning courses designed for employed lateral
entry teachers this fall. These two eight-week are designed for
teachers who have their own classrooms and are seeking alternative
licensing through the Regional Alternative Licensing Center.

UNC Asheville Hosts Art
Exhibition by Inmates at Avery Mitchell Correctional Facility
For more than 10 years, UNC Asheville has offered
college classes at four regional correctional facilities. Inmate
students have studied meteorology, psychology, public speaking and
art, among other classes. Recently, art instructor Heather Lewis
taught basic drawing classes at Avery Mitchell Correctional Facility
in Spruce Pine. Work completed by the students will be on view at
UNC Asheville this summer.

skills with UNC Asheville's Great Smokies Writing Program's summer
workshop series. The program will offer four workshops in poetry and
prose. Classes are open to all interested writers but class size is

Selected for Summer Internships with State Agencies
Gov. Beverly Perdue recently announced that two UNC
Asheville students are among 100 college, graduate and law students
selected for 10-week paid summer internships with state agencies.
More than 700 students from across the state applied to the program,
which is now in its 39th year.

81st Annual Commencement
More than 4,000 family and friends gathered on UNC
Asheville's Quadrangle Saturday morning to celebrate UNC Asheville's
2009 graduating class. Some 612 students were honored during the
81st annual Commencement Ceremony, including 365 spring graduates,
221 winter graduates and 26 summer graduates. They were all treated
to an impromptu performance by honorary degree recipient Doc Watson
as well as an inspiring commencement address by Thomas L. Purce.

UNC Asheville Professor Scott Walters Receives Grant from National
Endowment for the Arts
Scott Walters, UNC Asheville Associate Professor of
Drama, was recently given the "Access to Excellence" award along
with a National Endowment for the Arts $5,000 grant. This national
award presented annually by the N.E.A. is designed to acquaint
Americans with the best of the nation's cultural and artistic
heritage. Just 113 grants were awarded nationwide this year.

professors, was named today as a recipient of the Award for
