UNC Asheville Student Marks
University Milestone as First Third-Generation Graduate
When UNC Asheville senior Matt Anderson, a music
technology major from Asheville, graduates on Saturday, he will mark
an important University milestone. Anderson will become UNC
Asheville's first third-generation graduate. He will join father
Andy Anderson, a physics major from the Class of 1982, and his
grandmother Ann Anderson, a 1956 graduate of Asheville-Biltmore
College and biology major from UNC Asheville's Class of 1970, in the
ranks of the some 13,500 University alumni.

UNC Asheville Names First Cary
Caperton Owen Distinguished Professor in Economics; Professor's Work
will Focus on American Poverty Courses, Research
UNC Asheville Economics Professor Joseph M. Sulock has
been named the University's first Cary Caperton Owen Distinguished
Professor in Economics. The distinguished professorship was
established in October 2007 in honor of Cary Owen, who is known
throughout the state as a remarkable champion for public education.
It is especially fitting that the distinguished professorship is in
the field of economics; Owen was one of the first women to major in
economics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Home Series With Student Reading
UNC Asheville will wrap up its 2007-2008 Writers at
Home Series at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at Malaprops Bookstore/Café,
55 Haywood St., downtown Asheville. Great Smokies Writing Program
students who were enrolled in the Spring 2008 Advanced Prose
Workshop will read from their original work. The event is free and

Mixed Media Exhibition
"Recording Impermanence," an exhibition of 24 mixed
media pieces by UNC Asheville senior Carley Dergins, will be on view
May 7-20 at UNC Asheville's Highsmith University Union Gallery. The
show is a culmination of Dergins' work toward a bachelor of fine
arts degree from UNC Asheville. An opening reception will be held
from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, in the gallery, which is
located on the lower level of the building.

Awards $500,000 to Appalachian College Association; Funds to Support
New ACA-UNC Asheville Undergraduate Research Partnership
Berea, Ky. -- The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has
awarded a $500,000 grant to the Appalachian College Association (ACA)
that will expand undergraduate research expertise and opportunities
for faculty and students in the humanities and humanistic social
sciences at more than two dozen colleges in Central Appalachia, ACA
President Alice Brown announced today.

Carolina Writing Award
Jill Yarnall, UNC Asheville Assistant Director of
Public Information, recently received the 2008 Best of the Mountains
Award for Press Release Writing from the Public Relations
Association of Western North Carolina. It is the second consecutive
year that Yarnall won the top regional award.

Moorhead Honored for Teaching Excellence by UNC Board of Governors
One of UNC Asheville's most respected professors, Kevin
Moorhead, was named today as a recipient of the Award for Excellence
in Teaching from the University of North Carolina's Board of
Governors. Moorhead, professor and chair of environmental studies,
was nominated by a committee of UNC Asheville faculty. He will
receive a commemorative bronze medallion and a $7,500 cash prize at
a ceremony at UNC Chapel Hill next month.

Local writers will have the opportunity to hone their
skills with UNC Asheville's Great Smokies Writing Program's summer
workshop series. The program will offer four workshops in poetry and

United Arab Emirates, to attend a three-day conference on "Women as
Global Leaders." Organized by Zayed University, the conference

Cole to Give UNC Asheville Commencement Address
Renowned educator and humanitarian Johnnetta B. Cole
will deliver the UNC Asheville Commencement address on Saturday, May
10. The ceremony begins at 9 a.m. on the Ramsey Library Terrace. In
case of rain, Commencement will be held at the Asheville Civic
Center. Tickets are not required. Some 490 students are candidates
for bachelor's and master's of liberal arts degrees. During the
ceremony, UNC Asheville Chancellor Anne Ponder will also present an
honorary doctoral degree to Cole.

UNC Asheville recently named John G. Stevens as
Distinguished University Professor. Stevens, who joined the faculty
in 1968, is a Professor of Chemistry and has been instrumental in
