UNC Asheville's N.C. Center for Creative Retirement Director Ron Manheimer to Retire; Interim Director Named, National Search to Begin Later this Year

Ron Manheimer, founding director of UNC Asheville’s nationally renowned North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement (NCCCR), has announced that he will retire July 1, 2009. Manheimer, who will soon turn 66, has been Center director since August 1988.

UNC Asheville Hosts Talk by Exonerated Death Row Inmate Glen Edward Chapman

Glen Edward Chapman, an innocent man recently released from North Carolina’s death row, will speak at 12:15 p.m. Thursday, April 2, at UNC Asheville’s Humanities Lecture Hall. He will be joined by UNC Asheville Psychology Department Chair Pamela Laughon who served as a mitigation specialist on his case. The free talk is sponsored by UNC Asheville’s Psychology Department.

YMCA of WNC, UNC Asheville Celebrate Healthy Kids Day April 18; Healthy Living Events Free and Open to Families

The YMCA of Western North Carolina and UNC Asheville will host “YMCA Healthy Kids Day” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 18, on the UNC Asheville campus. Healthy Kids Day, the nation’s largest health day for children and families, will feature fun, engaging and creative activities to promote wellness and healthy living. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. on the lawn in front of UNC Asheville’s Justice Center and will continue throughout the day. Events will be held at the main stage at UNC Asheville’s Karl Strauss Track and at other locations across campus. The event is free and open to the public. 

UNC Asheville Honors Alumni with Annual Awards

UNC Asheville recently honored four of its most outstanding alumni with the University's annual National Alumni Awards. UNC Asheville Chancellor Anne Ponder and UNC Asheville National Alumni Council Chair Neal Rhoades (Class of 1986) presented the awards at a special dinner on campus on March 23, 2009.

Martha Connell to Speak at UNC Asheville's Craft Campus Lecture Series

UNC Asheville's Craft Campus will wrap up its year-long lecture series, "Meet the Maker: Conversations of Meaning with Craftspeople," with a talk by noted gallery director Martha Connell. She will speak at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 2, in UNC Asheville's Owen Conference Center. The event is free and open to the public.

Celebrate the International Year of Astronomy with Star Gazing at Pack Place, UNC Asheville

The Universe is yours to discover at two star gazing events celebrating the International Year of Astronomy. The viewings, held on the evenings of April 3 and 4, will take place in front of Pack Place Education, Arts & Science Center. The Health Adventure, UNC Asheville, and amateur astronomers from the area will be coordinating the events. 

$1.5 Million Gift to UNC Asheville to Fund Scholarships, Academic Needs

Current and future students at UNC Asheville will be the immediate beneficiaries of a recent $1.5 million gift to the University. The gift is among the largest ever made to UNC Asheville.

At the anonymous donor's request, $1 million will go toward scholarships and $500,000 toward operating support. The University will use $250,000 to purchase equipment needed for the University's new Zeis Science & Multimedia Building that will be dedicated this fall. The remaining $250,000 will be set aside to help create a new endowed faculty chair; those funds will be matched in future by private funds and by the state's Distinguished Professors Endowment Trust Fund, established by the N.C. General Assembly in 1985.

UNC Asheville Hosts Talk on Southern Religions by Renowned Scholar Samuel Hill

UNC Asheville's Religious Studies Department and History Department will host a talk on by noted southern religions scholar Samuel Hill at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 2, at UNC Asheville's Reuter Center. The talk -- "Tell About the South: Why Are They So Religious?" – will examine southern religions and religious history. The event is free and open to the public.

UNC Asheville's Center for Jewish Studies Hosts Concert by Acclaimed Jewish Musician Danny Maseng

UNC Asheville's Center for Jewish Studies will host a performance of "The Beauty, the Passion, the Heartbreak: Israel, 60 Years of Song" by celebrated Jewish singer Danny Maseng at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 29, at The Grey Eagle, 185 Clingman Ave., Asheville. This one-man show is the seventh annual Deutsch Family Concert. Tickets are $18 general admission and $12 for area students.

UNC Asheville Hosts Talk by Noted Mathematician on Computer Graphics, Fourth Dimension; Thomas Banchoff to Deliver Eighth Annual Parsons Lecture

Noted mathematician Thomas Banchoff will delve into the fourth dimension for UNC Asheville's eighth annual Parsons Lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 26, in UNC Asheville's Lipinsky Auditorium. Banchoff's talk on "From Flatland to Hypergraphics Geometry and Art in the 4th Dimension" will describe the new developments in computer graphics that will open the door to see higher dimensions. A mathematics professor at Brown University, Banchoff's research focuses on four-dimensional geometry and the development of computer graphics. He was the advisor to the recent movie, "Flatland," an animated film inspired by Edwin A. Abbott's classic novel set in a world of only two dimensions inhabited by geometrical shapes. The event is free and open to the public.
