UNC Asheville Students Take Alternate Spring Break, Use Week to Volunteer

Instead of hitting the beach this spring break, more than 55 UNC Asheville students will fan out across the south March 7-15 to participate in four different volunteer opportunities from Asheville to Mississippi. Each year, the University offers students a number of alternate spring break options to use the week away from classes to help make the world a better place.
Center for Diversity Education Hosts Nationally Touring Photo Exhibit "Road to Freedom"; Portraits of People with Disabilities on Display, Other Events Planned

UNC Asheville's Center for Diversity Education has been joined by a number of community groups to bring the nationally touring photography exhibition "Road to Freedom: Portraits of People with Disabilities" to Asheville. The exhibit of photos and text panels features children, teens and adults with the full spectrum of physical, sensory, learning and mental disabilities. It is on loan from the Family Diversity Project, a non-profit organization based in Amherst, Mass. "Road to Freedom" will be on view March 15-April 17 in UNC Asheville's Karpen Hall Lobby.
UNC Asheville Welcomes New Live Mascot, "Rocky I"; Rescued Victorian Bulldog Makes Debut at Homecoming Basketball Game

UNC Asheville's bulldog mascot, Rocky, has been known for decades to be tenacious, strong and courageous… now rescued can be added to this list of traits.
The University will unveil its new live mascot "Rocky I," a rescued white Victorian Bulldog with black spots, at half-time of the men's basketball homecoming game against Coastal Carolina. The game tips off at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at UNC Asheville's Justice Center. Rocky I will make his triumphant entrance following the presentation of the 2009 Athletics Hall of Fame inductees.
TheatreUNCA to Stage Chekhov Plays "The Bear" and "The Proposal"

TheatreUNCA will stage two short one-act Anton Chekhov comedies, "The Bear" and "The Proposal," from February 25 to March 1 at UNC Asheville's Carol Belk Theatre. Curtain is 8 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday with a 2 p.m. Sunday matinee. Each play will run approximately 30 minutes. All shows are open to the public.
Local Fiber Artist Jen Swearington to Speak at UNC Asheville's Craft Campus Lecture Series

UNC Asheville's Craft Campus will continue its year-long lecture series, "Meet the Maker: Conversations of Meaning with Craftspeople," with a talk by noted artist Jen Swearington on Thursday, Feb. 26. She will speak at 12:30 p.m. in Owen Hall, room 237, and at 7 p.m. in Laurel Forum, Karpen Hall. Both events are free and open to the public.
UNC Asheville Wins Big South Conference Quiz Bowl Tournament

Five UNC Asheville students donned their thinking caps and walked away champions of the Fourth Annual Big South Conference Quiz Bowl on February 7. The UNC Asheville players faced six Big South Conference challengers at Gardner-Webb University in tournament play, beating three-time reigning champions Liberty University. Team members include seniors David Coates and Robert Meehan; juniors Joseph Blair and Jennifer Guilford; and sophomore Josh Siary.
UNC Asheville Helps Tackle Growing Problem of Childhood Obesity; "GIFT" Program to Help Families Get Fit Together

UNC Asheville is offering help in the fight against childhood obesity with the fourth annual “Getting into Fitness Together” (GIFT), an eight-week program designed to help families increase levels of physical activity. The program, geared for children ages 6 to 12 and their families, features a variety of creative events, from scavenger hunts and aerobic Easter egg hunts to tag and water games, all designed to promote the enjoyment of active movement.

UNC Asheville faculty are widely published across the spectrum of genres – from poetry to physics. Now they are sharing their stories of challenges and successes in the publishing world.
UNC Asheville's Ramsey Library will host a seven-part lecture series "Brown Bag Book Talks with UNC Asheville Faculty Authors." The talks will be held at 12:30 p.m. in Special Collections, third floor of Ramsey Library. The events are free and open to the public.

From Asheville's East End neighborhood to the Ninth Ward in New Orleans, urban renewal and community dismemberment can have devastating effects on the residents. Clinical psychiatrist Mindy Fullilove calls the resulting stress "root shock," and it can have a negative impact on the entire community for decades.
"Root shock, at the level of the individual, is a profound emotional upheaval that destroys the working model of the world that had existed in the individual's head," says Fullilove. "Root shock, at the level of the local community… ruptures bonds, dispersing people to all the directions of the compass."
