UNC Asheville Debuts Television Series on Key Community Issues; Show Hosted by Chancellor Anne Ponder Airs on AET in Buncombe County

UNC Asheville will debut its first television series, "A Conversation with Asheville's University," at 10 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, on Asheville Educational Television. Hosted by UNC Asheville Chancellor Anne Ponder, the program brings together the region’s outstanding innovators, policy-makers and educators to discuss collaborative approaches to key community issues. The conversational program will focus on a different topic each week -- community health and wellness, environmental research and technology, K-12 education and teacher preparation, and new trends among Western North Carolina retirees. 

UNC Asheville Professor Sam Kaplan Honored for Teaching Excellence by UNC Board of Governors

Sam Kaplan, one of UNC Asheville's most respected professors, was named today as a recipient of the Award for Excellence in Teaching from the University of North Carolina's Board of Governors. Kaplan, associate professor of mathematics, was nominated by a committee of UNC Asheville faculty. He will receive a commemorative bronze medallion and a $7,500 cash prize.

UNC Asheville Hosts 25th Annual Crystal Ball Seminar

UNC Asheville's 25th annual Economic Crystal Ball Seminar will be held on Thursday, April 23, at UNC Asheville's Lipinsky Auditorium. Noted economists David W. Berson and James F. Smith will speak. The seminar, sponsored by the UNC Asheville Economics Department and Parsec Financial, begins with a 6:15 p.m. reception, followed by the speakers at 7 p.m., and a question-and-answer period at 8 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Telash Theatre Company Stages Spanish-Language Play on Immigration

Telash, Asheville's Spanish-language theatre company, will stage the original piece "Contamos todos" at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, May 1-2, and at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 3, in UNC Asheville's Highsmith University Union Grotto. The group is a collaboration between UNC Asheville and the local Latino community. The performance will be multilingual, weaving together vignettes showing many of the challenges that immigrants face in their adopted county. The event is free and open to the public, but a $5 donation is suggested. Ticket reservations are strongly advised.

Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Leonard Pitts will appear at two events in Asheville on Wednesday, April 22. Events are co-sponsored by the Asheville Citizen-Times, Mission Hospital's Diversity Committee and UNC Asheville's Mass Communication Department.

Area's Oldest Tailgate Market Reopens for Season at UNC Asheville on April 18

The North Asheville Tailgate Market, a Saturday morning institution for those who love fresh produce, herbs and flowers, will reopen for the season on Saturday, April 18, on the UNC Asheville campus. The area's oldest producer-only farmer's market continues to expand, adding three new vendors this year. The market is open from 8 a.m. to noon in UNC Asheville's northeast parking lot off Edgewood Road every Saturday until Christmas.

UNC Asheville Student Group Hosts Latino Scholarship Festival

UNC Asheville Hispanic student group, Club HOLA, will host its Second Annual Latino Scholarship Festival from noon-9 p.m. Saturday, April 18, on UNC Asheville's Quad. In case of rain, the event will be moved to Alumni Hall, located on the lower level of the Highsmith University Union. Proceeds will benefit local Latino youth who are pursuing college.

The event will feature traditional dancing, informational booths, a silent auction, food, art, games and live music. Headliners include the B*Side Players, of San Diego, Calif.

UNC Asheville Hosts Evening with Noted Local Author Sarah Addison Allen; Alumna Will Read from Recent Work on April 15

UNC Asheville's Literature Club will host an evening with New York Times best-selling author Sarah Addison Allen at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15, at UNC Asheville's Laurel Forum. Allen, a 1994 graduate of UNC Asheville, will read from her second novel "The Sugar Queen," which will be released in paperback this month. A book signing will follow her talk. The event is free and open to the public.

TheatreUNCA to Stage the Musical Comedy "Urinetown" April 22-26

TheatreUNCA will stage the Tony Award winning musical comedy "Urinetown" April 22-26 at UNC Asheville's Carol Belk Theatre. Curtain is 8 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday with a 2 p.m. Sunday matinee. All shows are open to the public.
