RBC Bank Donates $5,000 to UNC Asheville's Math Literacy Summit

UNC Asheville's Math Literacy Summit has helped local K-12 teachers, parents and students build better math skills. Now the annual event is also receiving support from RBC Bank. The bank recently donated $5,000 to support the 2009 daylong event, which featured a keynote address by noted mathematician and University of Arizona professor William Velez followed by eight workshops.
Great Smokies Writing Program Launches Online Publication

UNC Asheville’s Great Smokies Writing Program has launched a new online literary magazine, “The Great Smokies Review.” The magazine offers former and current students of the Great Smokies Writing Program an opportunity to share not only their creative work, but their writing experiences and expertise, as well.
UNC Asheville Hosts Second Annual Visualizing Human Rights Anti-Conference; Event Sponsored by Four North Carolina Universities

What do human rights abuses look like? How do they feel? What difference do they make to our lives? These and other questions will be examined at the Second Annual Visualizing Human Rights Anti-Conference from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at UNC Asheville's Highsmith University Union. The event will bring together visual and performance artists to put a human face on human rights in an effort to reach beyond traditional academic approaches. The event is free and open to the public; lunch will be provided.

UNC Asheville Student Group to Host Sixth Annual Human Rights Film Festival; Five Documentaries to be Screened, Discussed

UNC Asheville’s Amnesty International Student Chapter will hold its sixth annual Human Rights Film Festival November 9-13. Five films will be shown at 7 p.m. in UNC Asheville’s Highsmith University Union. Each film will be followed by a discussion led by a UNC Asheville professor, student or community member. The festival, which has become the largest of its kind in the Southeast, is free and open to the public.
UNC Asheville's Center for Jewish Studies Hosts One-Man Play "A Jerusalem Between Us"

UNC Asheville's Center for Jewish Studies will host "A Jerusalem Between Us," a one-man play written and performed by Aaron Davidman, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at UNC Asheville's Lipinsky Auditorium. The performance is held in conjunction with the Visualizing Human Rights Anti-Conference. The event is free and open to the public.
UNC Asheville Athletics to Begin Certification Process from NCAA

UNC Asheville Chancellor Anne Ponder has announced the start of the National Collegiate Athletic Association third-cycle recertification process for the university’s department of athletics.
The campus received its second certification by the NCAA in 2002.
The most recent certification process will evaluate the athletic department’s commitment to three operating principles outlined by the NCAA: 1) governance and commitment to rules, 2) academic integrity, and 3) gender/diversity issues and student-athlete well being.
UNC Asheville Professor, Painter Virginia Derryberry to Hold Solo Exhibition at Flood Fine Art Center Gallery

Virginia Derryberry, a noted painter and UNC Asheville art professor, will hold a solo exhibition of recent work at the Flood Fine Art Center Gallery, 109 Roberts St., in the Asheville River Arts District from November 13 to December 5. The exhibition, entitled "Eide/Eidola," features 15 large-scale paintings from her Rebis series. It is Derryberry's first solo exhibition in Asheville since 2000. An opening reception will be held 7-10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, in the gallery, which is located on the second floor of the Phil Mechanic Building. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

RENCI at UNC Asheville and Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College (A-B Tech) announce the third annual celebration of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day in Western North Carolina. The community drop-in event will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, at the RENCI at UNC Asheville Community Engagement Site, located in the Grove Arcade in downtown Asheville. The event is free and open to the public.
