UNC Asheville Holds Ninth Annual Multimedia Arts and Sciences Juried Student Exhibition

UNC Asheville's Ninth Annual Multimedia Arts and Sciences Juried Student Exhibition will be on view April 9-26 at UNC Asheville's Highsmith University Union Gallery. An opening reception will be held from 3-6 p.m. Friday, April 9, in the gallery. The exhibition is free and open to the public.

UNC Asheville Hosts Talk by James Baldwin Biographer

UNC Asheville's History Department will host a talk on early 20th-century African American writer James Baldwin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, in UNC Asheville's Laurel Forum, Karpen Hall. Magdalena J. Zaborowska, a noted author and Baldwin biographer, will discuss Baldwin's extended stays in Turkey, where he wrote some of his most important works. The event is free and open to the public.

Noted Author Raymond Tallis to Speak at UNC Asheville

UNC Asheville’s Humanities Program will sponsor two lectures by distinguished author Raymond Tallis. Tallis, known for his charismatic and engaging public speaking style, will discuss "The Future of Aging" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, in UNC Asheville's Reuter Center, and "Literature, Language and Consciousness: A Reader's Report" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, in UNC Asheville's Humanities Lecture Hall. Question-and-answer sessions with the audience will follow both lectures. The events are free and open to the public.

Blowers Gallery Hosts Exhibition by Asheville Artist Heather Lewis

Selected drawings by Asheville artist Heather Lewis will be on view from April 2-28 in UNC Asheville's Blowers Gallery. The exhibition includes 12 works Lewis calls "drawings" created using various media such as brake grindings, roofing felt and DVDs, as well as natural phenomena such as light and gravity. The event is free and open to the public.

Two UNC Asheville Seniors Hold Photography Exhibit on Campus

UNC Asheville seniors Maren Close and Janet Collins will hold a joint photography exhibition on campus. Their images will be on view in UNC Asheville’s Owen Hall Second Floor Gallery from April 2-13. An opening reception will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, April 2, in the gallery.

Pierce, University of North Carolina at Asheville associate professor of history, takes an unprecedented look into NASCAR's history and reveals a story that racing fans and Southern historians alike will find compelling.

UNC Asheville Holds First Wilma Sherrill Wellness Walk

Support your health and UNC Asheville student scholarships by participating in the first UNC Asheville Wilma Sherrill Wellness Walk at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 10, on the UNC Asheville campus. The family-friendly events include an easy 1.5 mile walk on UNC Asheville campus trails, free health screenings and special Kids' Zone activities. Healthy refreshments will be provided. Registration fee is $25. Proceeds benefit scholarships for student athletes pursuing a major in Health & Wellness.

UNC Asheville's 26th annual Economic Crystal Ball Seminar will be held on Thursday, April 8, at UNC Asheville's Lipinsky Auditorium. Noted economists David W. Berson and James F. Smith will make forecasts on the 2010 business and financial outlook.

Noted Scholar David Foster to Discuss Queer Theory in Latin American Literature

UNC Asheville will host a lecture on queer theory in Latin American literature by noted scholar and author David William Foster at 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, in UNC Asheville’s Laurel Forum, Karpen Hall. The lecture, “Of Gay Caballeros and Other Noble Heroes,” will discuss deconstructing the assumptions of heteronormativity. The event is free and open to the public.

UNC Asheville Names New University Attorney

Lucien "Skip" Capone III has been named as university counsel at UNC Asheville. Capone currently serves as university counsel at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, a position he has held since 1991. His appointment, following a national search, was approved by the UNC Asheville Board of Trustees on March 26. He will start his new position on April 15.
