February “Writers at Home” Features David Madden and Eric Steineger

The Writers at Home series, sponsored by UNC Asheville's Great Smokies Writing Program, continues in February with readings by writers David Madden and Eric Steineger. The readings take place at 3 p.m. Sunday, February 17, at Malaprop's Bookstore/Café, 55 Haywood St., in downtown Asheville. This event is free and open to the public.

UNC Asheville Celebrates Black History Month

UNC Asheville will celebrate Black History Month throughout February with a series of events including film screenings, lectures and a step show.

Award-winning journalist Alex Kotlowitz to screen new documentary, speak on race and poverty, February 21 at UNC Asheville

Best-selling author and award-winning journalist Alex Kotlowitz will speak about race, poverty and human rights in two daytime talks, and screen his new documentary film, "The Interrupters," at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21 at UNC Asheville.

"Images of Wonder," exhibition by Clarence Morgan, to open at UNC Asheville

Painter Clarence Morgan will open his solo exhibition at UNC Asheville with a lecture and reception on Friday, Feb. 8. The lecture will take place at 5 p.m. in Owen Hall room 237; a reception with the artist follows from 6-8 p.m. in the S. Tucker Cooke Gallery, also in Owen Hall on campus.

Jay Michaelson, author of “God vs. Gay? The Religious Case for Equality,” to make two appearances at UNC Asheville

Jay Michaelson, an award-winning journalist, a poet, activist, and scholar on the intersections of religion, spirituality, sexuality and law, will make two public appearances at UNC Asheville – a reading of poetry and prose at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, in Karpen Hall's Laurel Forum, and a lecture at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28 at the Sherrill Center, Mountain View Room. Both events are free and open to the public.

Textile exhibit by Ismini Samanidou to begin U.S. tour at Center for Craft, Creativity & Design

"Topography: recording place – mapping surface," a solo exhibition of textiles by Ismini Samanidou, will open with a reception with the artist from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, UNC Asheville's Center for Craft, Creativity & Design in Hendersonville.

New exhibit of photos of Uganda’s Bakonzo people to open at UNC Asheville

An exhibition of photos by Carrie Wagner of Uganda's Bakonzo people will open with a reception from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, at Blowers Gallery in UNC Asheville's Ramsey Library. RECEPTION RESCHEDULED: 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24.

Co-author of “Portfolios of the Poor” to lecture on microfinance

Development economist Jonathan Morduch will speak about microfinance and global poverty in two talks at UNC Asheville on Tuesday, Jan. 22.

Kiplinger's again ranks UNC Asheville among the “Best Values in Public Colleges”

UNC Asheville is included once again among the top 100 "Best Values in Public Colleges," in rankings recently released by Kiplinger's Personal Finance. Beginning with a pool of almost 600 public colleges and universities, Kiplinger's selected the top 100 based on a combination of best academic quality and value. UNC Asheville, which ranks 52nd in the nation, has regularly made the list for the past decade.
