UNC Asheville Offers SAT Prep Course Beginning February 20

Registration is now open for the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) prep classes offered by the Asheville Graduate Center. Classes will meet on the UNC Asheville campus.

Next “Writers at Home” Showcases Three from UNC Asheville’s Master of Liberal Arts Program

Three writers from UNC Asheville’s Master of Liberal Arts program will be featured in February’s installment of the “Writers at Home” series, sponsored by UNC Asheville’s Great Smokies Writing program. Award-winning screenwriter Maryedith Burrell, Ann Barrett, and Jessica Pepper will read from their current works at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, at Malaprop’s Bookstore and Café, 55 Haywood St. in downtown Asheville. It is free and open to the public.

Ceramic Artists Alice Ballard and Roger Dalrymple to Open Exhibit, Lead Workshop at UNC Asheville

Celebrated ceramic artist Alice Ballard and her husband, ceramist and architect Roger Dalrymple, will present their first joint ceramics exhibition, and lead an all-day ceramics workshop at UNC Asheville.

Author of “Moral Minority: Our Skeptical Founding Fathers” to Speak at UNC Asheville

Brooke Allen, author of “Moral Minority: Our Skeptical Founding Fathers” (2006, Ivan R. Dee), will lecture about the religious beliefs (or lack thereof) among our nation’s founders. Her talk is free and open to the public, and begins at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13, in UNC Asheville’s Humanities Lecture Hall.

Pulitzer Prize-Winning Poet Natasha Trethewey to Read at UNC Asheville

Natasha Tretheway, one of America’s most acclaimed poets and a compelling speaker, will offer a reading and talk at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, in UNC Asheville’s Humanities Lecture Hall. This event is free and open to the public.

Super Saturday Classes for Grades 3-8 Begin March 17

Registration is now open for UNC Asheville’s Super Saturday program for creative, highly motivated and/or academically gifted students in grades 3-8. Classes begin on March 17, with topics including chess, photography, wildlife exploration, creative writing, foreign language, theatre, and martial arts. More than 12,000 children from across Western North Carolina have explored their special interests through hands-on learning at Super Saturdays on the UNC Asheville campus.

Agreement Reached in Basketball Tourney Hosting

UNC Asheville, the Big South Conference and the Southern Conference have come to an agreement that will allow the Bulldog men's basketball team to play the BSC championship game in Kimmel Arena on the UNC Asheville campus at noon, Saturday, March 3, should they earn that opportunity. The Bulldogs would host the title game if they are the highest remaining seed.

From Asheville’s Basilica of St. Lawrence to New York City’s Grand Central Station – Tile Work by Guastavino is Subject of Lecture at UNC Asheville

The Rafael Guastavino family – responsible for remarkable tile work at architectural landmarks in Asheville and across the nation – will be the subject of a lecture at UNC Asheville by John Oschsendorf of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.). The lecture, “Guastavino Vaulting: From Barcelona to Black Mountain,” will take place at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, in UNC Asheville’s Owen Hall, in the third floor conference room. This event is free and open to the public.

UNC Asheville Guest Lecture: “Girls’ Athletics in Ancient Greece”

“Go Spartans: Girls’ Athletics in Ancient Greece,” is the subject of a guest lecture by Jenifer Neils at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, in the Whitman Room of UNC Asheville’s Ramsey Library. Neils is the Ruth Coulter Heede Professor of Art History and Classics at Case Western Reserve University. This lecture is free and open to the public.

Brooklyn-based PROJECT Trio Kicks off Spring Semester Cultural Events Season

PROJECT Trio, which combines classical training with an eclectic taste in musical styles, will perform at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, in UNC Asheville’s Lipinsky Auditorium. This concert begins the spring semester series of musical performances sponsored by the university’s Cultural Events and Special Academic Programs. The series will continue on March 31 with a performance by Mavis Staples.
