UNC Asheville Holds 40th Annual Spring Wildflower and Bird Pilgrimage

UNC Asheville's Biology Department and the Botanical Gardens at Asheville will celebrate Appalachian nature with the 40th annual Spring Wildflower and Bird Pilgrimage April 27-29. Fourteen special events, including talks and guided tours, will focus on local flora and fauna. All are open to the public.

UNC Asheville will host a screening of the documentary film, “Revenge of the Electric Car,” at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 16, in Robinson Hall, room 125. The screening is free and open to the public.

UNC Asheville Partners with Astronomy Club of Asheville to Build Star-Gazing Lab; Novel Design Has Retractable Roof for Full-Sky Nighttime Viewing

UNC Asheville and the Astronomy Club of Asheville today announced a joint project to build a small laboratory on the north side of campus that will significantly expand student opportunities for studying optical astronomy.

“Rounds in the Round” Dance Performance at UNC Asheville

“Rounds in the Round,” a performance by UNC Asheville’s dance program featuring ballet, modern, Jazz, hip hop, Filipino, Middle Eastern, tap, soft shoe and more, will take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 13-14, in Carol Belk Theatre on the campus.

“Why Democracy Needs the Humanities” – Humanities Scholar Martha Nussbaum to Speak at UNC Asheville

Martha Nussbaum, world-renowned philosopher, scholar and champion of liberal education, will speak at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 21, in UNC Asheville’s Lipinsky Auditorium. The author of more than 25 books, Nussbaum will focus her talk on her 2010 work, “Not for Profit: Why Democracy Needs the Humanities” (Princeton University Press). This event is free and open to the public.

UNC Asheville Offers Community Storm Spotter Training Course

UNC Asheville's Atmospheric Sciences Department will host advanced Skywarn storm-spotter training at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 12, at UNC Asheville's Robinson Hall, room 125. Justin Lane of the Greenville-Spartanburg National Weather Service Forecast Office will lead the two-hour course. Representatives from emergency response agencies, amateur radio operators and interested weather watchers are encouraged to attend. The event is free and open to the public.

UNC Asheville Hosts 28th Annual Economic Crystal Ball Seminar

UNC Asheville's 28th annual Economic Crystal Ball Seminar will be held on Thursday, April 19, at UNC Asheville's Lipinsky Auditorium. Noted economists David W. Berson and James F. Smith will make forecasts on the business and financial outlook for the coming year. The seminar, sponsored by the UNC Asheville Economics Department and Parsec Financial, begins with a 6:15 p.m. reception, followed by the speakers at 7 p.m., and a question-and-answer period at 8 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

A Century Later, Allan Wolf Brings “Voices from the Titanic” to Life at UNC Asheville

One-hundred years to the day that the Titanic sank, Asheville writer Allan Wolf will present a reader’s theater presentation of his award-winning book, “The Watch That Ends the Night: Voices from the Titanic” at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 15, in UNC Asheville’s Karpen Hall, Laurel Forum. This presentation, which will include related music, visual slides, and tea and pastries reminiscent of tea time on the Titanic, is free and open to the public.

Erskine Bowles to Deliver UNC Asheville Commencement Address at May 5 Ceremony

Erskine Bowles, one of North Carolina’s best-known public servants, will deliver the commencement address and receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree when UNC Asheville holds its May 2012 Commencement at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 5. Al Whitesides, a lifetime Asheville resident, and leader in civil rights, business and education, will also receive an honorary degree.

North Asheville Tailgate Market Opens for Season April 14

The North Asheville Tailgate Market, a Saturday morning tradition for those who love fresh produce, baked goods and flowers, will reopen for its 32nd season on Saturday, April 14, on the UNC Asheville campus. The market is open from 8 a.m. to noon every Saturday and offers plenty of convenient parking.
