New Exhibition, “Crumbs,” to Open at UNC Asheville

"Crumbs," a new exhibit of sculptures by UNC Asheville senior art major Sarah Ray, will be on view beginning April 26, in Blowers Gallery in UNC Asheville's Ramsey Library. A reception with the artist will be held from 3-6 p.m. Friday, May 4, in the gallery.

“Dissolution” – Funerary Urn Art Exhibit to Open at UNC Asheville

"Dissolution," an art exhibition of stoneware funerary urns by UNC Asheville senior Tiffany Purser, will be on view May 4-15 in the Highsmith University Union Gallery. An opening reception will be held from 3-6 p.m. Friday, May 4, in the gallery. The reception and the exhibit are free and open to the public.

UNC Asheville Included in Princeton Review’s Green Colleges Guide

UNC Asheville is among America's "green" colleges and universities, and has been included in "The Princeton Review's Guide to 322 Green Colleges for 2012," released this week. The guide profiles institutions that demonstrate notable commitments to sustainability in their academic offerings, campus infrastructure, activities and career preparation, and was created in collaboration with the Center for Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building Council.

UNC Asheville Student Wins Fulbright Scholarship

UNC Asheville senior Annelise DeJong has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to teach English in Sri Lanka. DeJong was selected for this prestigious honor on the basis of academic achievement and demonstrated capacity for leadership. She will leave in October to begin work in Sri Lanka through the Fulbright Program for U.S. Students, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. DeJong is the 37th UNC Asheville student to be awarded a Fulbright Scholarship.

UNC Asheville's Catherine Frank Featured on UNC-TV's "North Carolina People" April 20

Catherine Frank, director of the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement at UNC Asheville, will discuss the center's genesis and future with William Friday on UNC-TV's "North Carolina People" set to air at 9 p.m. Friday, April 20, and 5:30 p.m. Sunday, April 22. The program can also be seen online beginning Monday, April 23, on the UNC-TV website.

UNC Asheville Mathematician Sam Kaplan Honored with Distinguished Teaching Award

Sam Kaplan, associate professor of Mathematics at UNC Asheville, has been awarded the Southeastern Section Mathematical Association of America (MAA) Award for Distinguished Teaching of Mathematics. He was honored at the MAA's Southeastern Section Spring 2012 Meeting at Clayton State University in Morrow, Georgia.

UNC Asheville’s Mark Sidelnick Named Art Educator of the Year

Mark Sidelnick, associate professor of Education and coordinator of Arts Education Licensure at UNC Asheville, has been named Art Educator of the Year by the North Carolina Art Education Association (NCAEA).

“Tell Me on a Sunday” – Reuter Center Singers Perform Songs of Andrew Lloyd Webber

"Tell Me on a Sunday," the annual spring concert from the Reuter Center Singers, will feature some of the most loved songs in musical theater – the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber. The concert takes place at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 6, in UNC Asheville's Reuter Center, home of the N.C. Center for Creative Retirement.

RENCI at UNC Asheville Hosts Open House on April 20

The Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI) at UNC Asheville invites the public to attend a drop-in open house from 3:30-5:00 p.m. Friday, April 20, at the RENCI at UNC Asheville Engagement Site, located in the Grove Arcade in downtown Asheville. The event is free and open to the public.

UNC Asheville Honors Alumni, Student Leaders at Special Ceremony

UNC Asheville recently presented its annual alumni and student leaderships awards at a special ceremony on campus. Chancellor Anne Ponder, Vice Chancellor Bill Haggard, and UNC Asheville National Alumni Council Chair Barbara Baker ('71) made the presentations.
