Ron Rash and Charles Frazier to Headline Summer Author Speaker Series at UNC Asheville

A quintet of great Southern writers, including Ron Rash and Charles Frazier, will speak in July at UNC Asheville's Reuter Center as part of the Summer Authors Speakers Series. The series of talks, produced by the Appalachian Studies Program of the College for Seniors at UNC Asheville's N.C. Center for Creative Retirement, is free and open to the public, 3-4:30 p.m. Sundays. NOTE - THIS IS NOW A TICKETED EVENT.

2012 Windgate Fellows Announced by UNC Asheville's Center for Craft, Creativity and Design

UNC Asheville's Center for Craft, Creativity and Design (CCCD) has awarded ten graduating seniors each with $15,000 in the form of a Windgate Fellowship. More than 120 universities from across the United States were each invited to each nominate two graduating seniors with exemplary skill in craft for one of the largest awards offered nationally to art students. Applicants completed an online application with images of their work and a proposal outlining how the $15,000 would enhance their careers.

Writers at Home Spring Series Concludes with Readings from "The Great Smokies Review"

The Writers at Home spring series concludes with readings by contributors to recent issues of "The Great Smokies Review," the online literary magazine published by UNC Asheville's Great Smokies Writing Program. This event is free and open to the public and begins at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 20, at Malaprop's Bookstore/Café, 55 Haywood St., Asheville.

UNC Asheville Celebrates 84th Annual Commencement

A spring downpour couldn't dampen the spirit of the more than 5,000 family and friends gathered on UNC Asheville's Quadrangle Saturday morning to celebrate the university's 2012 graduating class. Some 731 students were honored as the Class of 2012 during the 84th annual Commencement Ceremony, including 480 spring graduates, 222 winter graduates and 29 summer graduates.

UNC Asheville’s Great Smokies Writing Program Announces Summer 2012 Workshops

Local writers will have the opportunity to hone their skills with UNC Asheville's Great Smokies Writing Program summer workshops in poetry and prose. Classes are open to all interested writers but class size is limited; early registration is suggested.

UNC Asheville 84th Annual Commencement is May 5; Erskine Bowles, Al Whitesides to Be Honored as 480 Receive Diplomas

Some 5,000 people will fill UNC Asheville's Main University Quadrangle beginning 9 a.m. Saturday, May 5, as the university holds its 84th annual Commencement ceremony. Among the 480 students who have earned diplomas, more than 430 are expected to participate in commencement. UNC Asheville's Class of 2012 comprises 731 graduates, including those who earned their diplomas in August and December 2011.

New Textile Art Exhibition to Open at UNC Asheville

"I Carry You with Me," a new exhibit of garments by UNC Asheville senior art major Molly Martin, will open with a reception with the artist from 6-8 p.m. Friday, May 4, in the Owen Hall second floor gallery on campus.

“Write Now” – New Creative Writing Summer Program for High School Students to Debut at UNC Asheville

"Write Now," a new creative writing program for high school students, debuts this summer at UNC Asheville. "Write Now" offers each participating student experience in different styles of writing – fiction, creative non-fiction and poetry – under the tutelage of three of Asheville's finest writers. "Write Now" will be held weekdays, June 18-29, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., on UNC Asheville's campus.

UNC Asheville to Offer Health and Physical Education Licensure for Teachers

UNC Asheville is now accepting applications for a new K-12 teacher licensure program in Health and Physical Education. The program, approved this spring by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction, begins in Fall 2012.
