“Writers at Home” Highlights Great Smokies Review Authors

Cathy Vance Agrella, Terry Gess and LJ Faulkner will read from their works in the next installment of Writers at Home, from UNC Asheville's Great Smokies Writing Program (GSWP). All three are contributors to The Great Smokies Review, GSWP's online literary journal. The reading is free and open to the public, and begins at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21, at Malaprop's Bookstore/Café, 55 Haywood St., in downtown Asheville.
“The Deaf Community at a Crossroads” – Gallaudet University President Emeritus I. King Jordan to Speak at UNC Asheville

I. King Jordan, who made history when he was appointed as the first deaf president of Gallaudet University, will deliver a talk, "The Deaf Community at a Crossroads" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, in UNC Asheville's Highsmith University Union. Jordan will also speak to smaller groups of students during his visit to UNC Asheville as part of the university's first Disability Awareness Week.
Author Meg Hirshberg to Meet with Entrepreneurs at UNC Asheville

Meg Cadoux Hirshberg, author of "For Better or For Work: A Survival Guide for Entrepreneurs and Their Families," will speak about balancing family life and a family business, at the next meeting of UNC Asheville's Family Business Forum. This event begins at 8 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19, in UNC Asheville's Sherrill Center, Mountain View Room. Admission is $25; free for Family Business Forum members and UNC Asheville students.
UNC Asheville Offers GRE, SAT and LSAT Prep Classes Starting Soon

Registration is now open for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and Law School Admission Test (LSAT) prep classes offered beginning in October by the Asheville Graduate Center. Classes will meet on the UNC Asheville campus.
UNC Asheville Career and Graduate School Fair Set for October 16

The Career and Graduate School Fair offers a chance to meet local employers and representatives of graduate schools in the region. The fair, sponsored by UNC Asheville's Career Center, takes place from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16 in the Kimmel Arena concourse at the Sherrill Center. The fair is free and open to all degree-seeking college students and college graduates.

"Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War," a national traveling exhibition, will open at UNC Asheville's Ramsey Library on October 15. The exhibit examines how President Lincoln viewed the Constitution as applied to three intertwined crises of the Civil War—the secession of Southern states, slavery and wartime civil liberties.
