RENCI at UNC Asheville Hosts Swannanoa Flood Risk Management Project Public Open House on February 24

The Swannanoa Flood Risk Management Project invites the public to attend a drop-in open house to be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb, 24, at the Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI) at UNC Asheville Engagement Site, located in the Grove Arcade in downtown Asheville. The event is free and open to the public.

Saturdays are super this spring at UNC Asheville! Academically gifted, creative, and/or highly motivated students in grades 3-8 have the opportunity to explore foreign language, model rocketry, magic, and much more at UNC Asheville’s spring semester Super Saturday program, beginning March 5. More than 12,000 children from across Western North Carolina have explored their special interests through hands-on learning on the UNC Asheville campus as part of Super Saturdays.
UNC Asheville Students and Faculty Help Unravel Mysteries of Recent Severe Winter Weather

As people across the Southeast hunkered down for massive snowfalls this month, UNC Asheville Atmospheric Sciences professor Doug Miller and his students headed out into the storm. The group worked around the clock launching weather balloons to collect important atmospheric data that will help scientists better understand winter weather. In the process, they were able to provide information to the National Weather Service to ensure accurate forecasts.
UNC Asheville and USDA Forest Service join forces in forest protection effort

The University of North Carolina at Asheville and the USDA Forest Service are joining forces to boost awareness and understanding of threats to forest health. The joint venture, announced recently by UNC Asheville Chancellor Anne Ponder, will team the University's advanced computer modeling and imaging capabilities with Forest Service research expertise to develop Web-based resources that make threats to forest health readily visible and comprehensible.
UNC Asheville Offers Online and Off-Campus Courses

To meet the continuing education needs of busy working professionals, UNC Asheville will offer a variety of online courses in the spring. Online coursework features the same academic rigor as face-to-face classes, but will allow students to access course information at any time that fits their schedule. Some classes will involve attendance at off-campus locations or teleconferencing at many different sites – UNC Asheville, Appalachian State University, Winston Salem State University, Fayetteville State University, Elizabeth City State University and UNC Wilmington.
UNC Asheville to Hold Multimedia Arts and Sciences New Media Exhibition

"SHIFT," a site-specific exhibition featuring work by UNC Asheville Multimedia Arts and Sciences students will take place from 7-10 p.m. November 12-13 on UNC Asheville's campus in and around Zeis Hall. The exhibition will begin both nights with an opening reception in the main lobby of UNC Asheville's Zeis Hall, where maps to the installations will be available.
UNC Asheville's Adam Reagan wins statewide service award

Adam Reagan, already known in Asheville for his service work, has just gained statewide recognition. The UNC Staff Assembly, an elected body of representatives of the staff of the 17 UNC campuses and other sites, has given its first-ever Erskine Bowles Service Award to Adam Reagan of UNC Asheville's Information Technology Services department. Reagan was honored for "ability to overcome adversity, agility for life and his outstanding commitment to UNC Asheville, the Asheville community, the UNC system, and to mankind as a whole."

UNC Asheville’s National Environmental Modeling and Analysis Center (NEMAC) and Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI), in partnership with RiverLink and the Swannanoa Flood Risk Management Project, are co-sponsoring a free bus tour of the Biltmore area – including Lake Craig, the Biltmore Avenue Bridge, and a walking tour of Biltmore Village, one of the areas affected by the 2004 floods – at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 7.
National Environmental Modeling and Analysis Center (NEMAC) Launches Redesigned Website

UNC Asheville’s National Environmental Modeling and Analysis Center (NEMAC) has a new Drupal-based website, at http://nemac.unca.edu, launched on October 6. The dramatically redesigned site, created by the center’s in-house digital team, embodies the center’s forward-thinking vision and aligns with UNC Asheville’s newly designed website, launched earlier this year. “Visitors to our new site will quickly learn who we are, and about the work we are doing locally, regionally, and statewide,” said Bridget O’Hara, NEMAC’s science delivery specialist.

The Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI) at UNC Asheville will hold a drop-in open house from 3:30-5 p.m. Friday, October 15, at the RENCI at UNC Asheville Engagement Site, located in the Grove Arcade in downtown Asheville. The event is free and open to the public.
