Interferometer Receivers Mounted on PARI Telescopes

Six years of design, engineering and computer programming were brought to a climax this week with the hoisting and mounting of two highly specialized receivers onto radio telescopes at the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI), in Transylvania County, N.C. Faculty and students at UNC Asheville and Furman University, and PARI staff, designed and constructed this new instrument for studying signals from space. The two custom-built receivers, each mounted on PARI’s 26-meter radio telescopes, will be linked using specialized, high-speed computers to create a complex piece of equipment called an interferometer.

“Symbiosis” – Exhibit of Digital Video Art Thursday Evening at UNC Asheville

“Symbiosis,” a site-specific exhibition featuring works in digital video art by UNC Asheville students, will take place from 7-10 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 10, on the UNC Asheville campus, in and around Zeis Hall.

Panel at UNC Asheville: Media Ethics in the Social Media Age

UNC Asheville’s Mass Communication Department will host “Social Media on Ice” a panel discussion on media ethics featuring area media professionals, from 12:30-1:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 4, in UNC Asheville’s Highsmith University Union, Alumni Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

23 Liberal Arts Colleges to Meet at UNC Asheville as Part of National Science Foundation Effort to Strengthen Undergraduate Research

More than 100 faculty and administrators from colleges around the country will gather at UNC Asheville June 28-30 for a conference aimed at strengthening undergraduate research in the sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics. The conference is hosted by the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC), which is headquartered at UNC Asheville.

Outdoor Digital Photography, Photo Book-Making and Crochet Workshops Offered at N.C. Center for Creative Retirement

The N.C. Center for Creative Retirement presents three workshops in June, "Outdoor Digital Photography," "Making a Bound Photo Book" and "Heritage Crochet in Contemporary Design and Application." All will meet at UNC Asheville's Reuter Center and are open to the public.

Disney Animation Legends Eric and Susan Goldberg to Appear at UNC Asheville

Disney legends Eric and Susan Goldberg will spend the week of March 28, 2011 at UNC Asheville conducting workshops with students in the Multimedia Arts and Sciences (MMAS) program. The Goldbergs will also serve as co-jurors for this year’s MMAS Student Show.

"Green" Arts Organizations Featured in New Brochure Funded by Blue Ridge National Heritage Area

UNC Asheville's Center for Craft, Creativity & Design will unveil its new brochure Wednesday evening, highlighting the work of two WNC art organizations that are models of "green" and sustainable practices, Energy Xchange of Burnsville, and Jackson County Green Energy Park (JCGEP) in Dillsboro.
