The UNC Asheville Singers, also known as the Studio 18 vocal ensemble, will perform at the White House for a reception hosted by President and Mrs. Obama and attended by hundreds of dignitaries and invited guests.
UNC Asheville students will showcase their work in community service projects and internships at a celebration with community partners from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, in the Kimmel Arena on campus.
UNC Asheville will host its annual Head Start Holiday Party from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, in the Highsmith University Union, Alumni Hall. Donated gifts are already wrapped and individually labeled for the 107 youngsters in the Pisgah View and Barnardsville Head Start centers who will attend.
"Remnants of Fleeting Moments" – an exhibit of oil paintings by UNC Asheville senior Hanna Trussler, will open with a reception at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 30, in Blowers Gallery, in UNC Asheville's Ramsey Library.
UNC Asheville students will present more than 150 research projects – including one to help Highland Brewery comply with federal workplace noise standards, and another to develop a smartphone app small restaurants can use to manage inventory – at the university's Fall Undergraduate Research Symposium, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28.
UNC Asheville significantly outperformed national averages in key academic benchmarks identified in the just-released 2012 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). UNC Asheville also scored significantly higher than the national average in the "deep approaches to learning" scale measuring activities which, according to the study authors, "result in effective and enduring learning."
UNC Asheville's Art Department will hold its annual holiday sale of ceramics, glass and other art objects from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, in the S. Tucker Cooke Gallery, located on the ground floor of Owen Hall. The sale is open to the public.
"Horses in Motion," a collection of paintings by UNC Asheville senior Kathleen Kelley, will open with a reception at 6 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 19, in UNC Asheville's Ramsey Library. The exhibit is the culmination of Kelley's work toward a bachelor's degree with a major in art.
Vocalist Stephanie Morgan and keyboard artist Chuck Lichtenberger of Stephanie's Id will join UNC Asheville's Percussion Ensemble as part of a concert which will also feature the UNC Asheville String Quartet. The music begins at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8 in Lipinsky Auditorium.
