"Socrates in the Streets" Lecture by Award-Winning Educator J. Peter Euben

What might the ancient Greek philosophers have to say about contemporary politics? In a lecture entitled “Socrates in the Streets,” award-winning professor and author J. Peter Euben will discuss the Ancient Greek influences on civic engagement at 7 p.m. Monday, April 4 in Karpen Hall’s Laurel Forum on the UNC Asheville campus. The lecture is free and open to the public.

RENCI at UNC Asheville Hosts Swannanoa Flood Risk Management Project Public Open House on February 24

The Swannanoa Flood Risk Management Project invites the public to attend a drop-in open house to be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb, 24, at the Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI) at UNC Asheville Engagement Site, located in the Grove Arcade in downtown Asheville. The event is free and open to the public.

Registration Now Open for College for Seniors Spring Term

UNC Asheville's nationally renowned College for Seniors has opened registration for spring term courses, held March 21-May 13. Course catalogues were mailed today and course listings are available online. Classes will take place at UNC Asheville's Reuter Center, home of the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement.

UNC Asheville’s Super Saturday Program Offers Super Classes for Kids

Saturdays are super this spring at UNC Asheville! Academically gifted, creative, and/or highly motivated students in grades 3-8 have the opportunity to explore foreign language, model rocketry, magic, and much more at UNC Asheville’s spring semester Super Saturday program, beginning March 5. More than 12,000 children from across Western North Carolina have explored their special interests through hands-on learning on the UNC Asheville campus as part of Super Saturdays.

Baby Boom Expert to Speak on "Generation Ageless: The Boom that Won't go Bust"

Baby boom expert and author J. Walker Smith will speak on the dire predictions often made for the Baby Boom generation, such as depleted nest eggs and reductions to Social Security, and suggest that the future may not be so dark. His lecture, "Generation Ageless: The Boom that Won't Go Bust," will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, in UNC Asheville's Reuter Center, Manheimer room, and will be followed by a question-and-answer period. The event is free and open to the public.

Dan Pierce Headlines Faculty Book Talk Series

Dan Pierce, UNC Asheville history professor, will kick off the spring semester series of Brown Bag Book Talks with UNC Asheville Faculty Authors with a reading from his acclaimed book, "Real NASCAR: White Lightning, Red Clay, and Big Bill France." The reading will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 25, in the Special Collections Reading Room of Ramsey Library.

Dan Ariely discusses "Everyday Irrationality" at UNC Asheville

How do we choose among products? How much are we willing to pay? Why do we trust and lose trust? Duke University Professor Dan Ariely, a frequent contributor to American Public Media's "Marketplace" program will discuss how irrationality plays a role in decisions like these in a talk at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12 in the Manheimer Room at UNC Asheville's Reuter Center.
