April 18th Lecture to Examine Religion, Race and Boxing in the New South

Arthur Remillard, a scholar of religion in the American South and its connections with sports, will deliver UNC Asheville's annual Sam Hill Lecture in Southern Religion. Remillard's talk, "Jack Johnson, We Have Waited So Long for You – Religion, Race and Boxing in the New South," takes place at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 18 in the Sherrill Center, Mountain View Room.
Study: UNC Asheville Makes $268 Million Economic Impact

An Economic Impact Study released today by UNC Asheville estimates the university's impact at approximately $268 million for fiscal year 2012 in the Asheville metro area.
UNC Asheville Hosts 29th Annual Economic Crystal Ball Seminar

UNC Asheville's 29th annual Economic Crystal Ball Seminar will be held on Thursday, April 18, at UNC Asheville's Lipinsky Auditorium. Noted economists David W. Berson and James F. Smith will make forecasts on the business and financial outlook for the coming year. The seminar, sponsored by the UNC Asheville Economics Department and Parsec Financial, begins with a 6:15 p.m. reception, followed by the speakers at 7 p.m., and a question-and-answer period at 8 p.m. The seminar takes place at Lipinsky Auditorium on campus and is free and open to the public.
PTSD Expert Jonathan Shay to Hold Discussion with Veterans at UNC Asheville

Dr. Jonathan Shay, a renowned psychiatrist who has specialized in treating veterans of war, will offer three public talks, April 9-11, at UNC Asheville. He also will meet with UNC Asheville's Student-Veteran Alliance as well as students and community members.

Queer Studies Conference Set for April 4-6 at UNC Asheville

The 2013 UNC Asheville Queer Studies Conference will take place April 4-6 in various locations on campus. This biennial conference is a gathering of academics, artists and activists, including participants from around the country and abroad, addressing issues of gender, sexuality, diversity, human and civil rights.
UNC Asheville to help middle schools implement new Common Core Standards

UNC Asheville faculty will begin intensive work this summer with teams of teachers from Asheville City and McDowell County Schools to help the schools implement new state standards, provide more intellectually rigorous instruction, and support teaching of "big ideas."

“Batman and Psychology” author to speak at UNC Asheville

Travis Langley, author of "Batman and Psychology: A Dark and Stormy Knight" (Wiley, 2012) will probe these questions and more in a talk at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 21, at UNC Asheville's Lipinsky Auditorium.
Junior Walk, opponent of mountaintop removal mining, to speak at UNC Asheville

Junior Walk, a West Virginia native who travels the country speaking out against mountaintop-removal mining on behalf of the Keeper of the Mountains Foundation, will speak at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, in UNC Asheville's Highsmith University Union, Alumni Hall. Walk was a 2011 recipient of the Earth Island Institute's Brower Youth Award for Environmental Leadership.
