UNC Asheville offers final free tax preparation session April 6

With the April 15 deadline looming for filing income tax returns, Saturday, April 6, brings one last chance for community residents to get their income tax returns prepared for free by UNC Asheville volunteers as part of the IRS VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program. The tax preparation assistance team will be ready to prepare tax returns from 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m., April 6, in the Pack Memorial Library, 67 Haywood Street in downtown Asheville. (The library is closed March 30 for the Easter holiday.) No appointment is necessary.

UNC Asheville Welcomes Community Organizations to Service Learning and Internship Showcase

UNC Asheville students will showcase their work in community service projects and internships at a celebration with community partners from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, in the Kimmel Arena on campus.

UNC Asheville Provides Free Tax Preparation Help

With April 15 approaching, people who make $50,000 or less can get free help preparing their federal and state income returns, thanks to trained UNC Asheville faculty, staff and students volunteering in the IRS VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program. Already this tax season, UNC Asheville volunteers have helped prepare more than 300 federal and state tax returns, and helped taxpayers file for more than $430,000 in refunds.

For UNC Asheville Students, Spring Break Was a Time for Serving Communities

Should a week spent cutting sheet metal and sleeping in a converted school be considered a Spring Break? "I think it's better described as the best spring break ever," says Flannery Pearson-Clarke, a UNC Asheville junior majoring in Environmental Studies. She and eight other young women, all UNC Asheville students, spent their “week off” in rural Chavies, Ky., installing needed insulation and sheet metal skirting on mobile homes, to help needy residents save money and energy.

UNC Asheville to Host Holiday Party for 108 Head Start Youngsters

UNC Asheville will host its annual Head Start Holiday Party from 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, in the Highsmith University Union, Alumni Hall, on the campus. Donated gifts are already wrapped and individually labeled for the 108 preschoolers in the Pisgah View and Barnardsville Head Start centers who are expected to attend.

"Life is Calling," Week of Career and Personal Development Activities Held at UNC Asheville

UNC Asheville's Career Center will host "Life is calling. What is your intention?" – a series of career and personal development activities, from March 28-April 1. The series is designed to help participants align their career goals with their life vision, and will include motivational speakers and workshops. All events are free and open to the public.

Summer Camp and Community Service Fairs Offer Job and Volunteer Opportunities

Summer job opportunities and opportunities for community service volunteer positions will be the focus of the 2011 Summer Camp Fair and Community Service Fair, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, at UNC Asheville’s Highsmith University Union. These companion events are free and open to all members of the community as well as UNC Asheville students.
