RENCI at UNC Asheville Hosts Open House on October 28

The Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI) at UNC Asheville will hold a drop-in open house from 3:30-5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, at the RENCI at UNC Asheville Engagement Site, located in the Grove Arcade, downtown Asheville. The event is free and open to the public.
“Well-a-Bration” Events Support Healthier Eating

Nutrition workshops, garden tours and cooking demonstrations in the Sherrill Center’s new teaching kitchen will all be part of “Well-a-Bration,” a week of activities showcasing UNC Asheville’s health and wellness programs. Well-a-Bration, which takes place Monday, Sept. 12, through Saturday, Sept. 17 at UNC Asheville, will also feature exercise programs, meetings of health policy leaders, health and sports expos, and a talk by Dr. Patch Adams, the well-known physician, clown, and advocate.
23 Liberal Arts Colleges to Meet at UNC Asheville as Part of National Science Foundation Effort to Strengthen Undergraduate Research

More than 100 faculty and administrators from colleges around the country will gather at UNC Asheville June 28-30 for a conference aimed at strengthening undergraduate research in the sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics. The conference is hosted by the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC), which is headquartered at UNC Asheville.
Math Meets Craft to Raise Awareness of Threats to Coral Reefs

Western North Carolina is joining a global effort to crochet a coral reef. As part of the unique project, the "Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef" by the Institute For Figuring (IFF) in Los Angeles, which unites non-Euclidean hyperbolic geometry with ancient craft techniques, area artisans are working to create beautiful and lifelike models that will raise awareness of threats to the world's coral. The Asheville Reef, organized by UNC Asheville's Center for Craft, Creativity & Design, will involve crochet groups in Brevard and Hendersonville, as well as UNC Asheville, Appalachian State University and Western Carolina University.
UNC Asheville Holds 39th Annual Spring Wildflower and Bird Pilgrimage

UNC Asheville's Biology Department will celebrate Appalachian nature with its 39th annual Spring Wildflower and Bird Pilgrimage April 29-May 1. Sixteen special events, including talks and guided tours, will focus on local flora and fauna. All are open to the public.
UNC Asheville Awarded $599,850 by National Science Foundation to Develop Future Chemistry Professionals

UNC Asheville has been awarded $599,850 by the National Science Foundation (NSF) that will provide 31 chemistry students with scholarships and implement a program to enhance educational support in the chemistry major. The program will include recruiting motivated and promising students, providing opportunities for undergraduate research, offering faculty and peer mentorship, and educating and grooming students for success as chemistry professionals.

UNC Asheville to Host 12th Annual Science Olympiad Tournament

Young scientists from 13 middle schools and nine high schools in Western North Carolina will test their talents in the 12th annual regional Science Olympiad Tournament at UNC Asheville Saturday, March 19. The competition will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at various locations across campus. Each team can field a group of 18 students in a host of science related events, ranging from forensics to food science.
