Lauren Winner to Present “The Art of Spiritual Memoir” at UNC Asheville

Lauren Winner, a writer, historian and theologian known for chronicling her own spiritual journeys, will present "The Art of Spiritual Memoir" at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 3 in UNC Asheville's Karpen Hall, Laurel Forum.

ReVIEWING Black Mountain College 4: Looking Forward at Buckminster Fuller's Legacy

The Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center (BMCM+AC) in partnership with UNC Asheville, the UNC Asheville Howerton Distinguished Professor in the Humanities and the Buckminster Fuller Institute (BFI) is pleased to announce ReVIEWING Black Mountain College 4 to be held September 28-30, 2012, a weekend gathering of scholars, practitioners and artists coming to Asheville to discuss, present and experience topics and workshops related to the forward-thinking ideas of Buckminster Fuller. The three-day conference will focus on Fuller's "comprehensive anticipatory design science" as a means for fostering prosperous, livable communities through creative, interdisciplinary thinking. The program for the weekend will include an array of presentations, panels and free experiential workshops connected to the vast web of ideas, initiatives and practices that Fuller championed during his life - and that others have taken on since his death.

Charles Frazier to Speak July 8 at UNC Asheville

Charles Frazier, author of "Cold Mountain" and other novels, will speak at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 8, as part of a new series of talks by great Southern writers at UNC Asheville's Reuter Center. The series is free and open to the public, and will feature 3 p.m. author talks every Sunday afternoon in July.

A quintet of great Southern writers, including Ron Rash and Charles Frazier, will speak in July at UNC Asheville's Reuter Center as part of the Summer Authors Speakers Series. The series of talks, produced by the Appalachian Studies Program of the College for Seniors at UNC Asheville's N.C. Center for Creative Retirement, is free and open to the public, 3-4:30 p.m. Sundays.

“Woven Together” – Historical Exhibit on Marion Manufacturing to Open at UNC Asheville

"Woven Together: Marion Manufacturing and McDowell County," a Western North Carolina traveling exhibition telling the story of the Marion Manufacturing textile mill, will open on June 4 in Blowers Gallery in UNC Asheville's Ramsey Library.

New Art Exhibit to Open at UNC Asheville’s Blowers Gallery

"Footprints in the Sand," a new exhibit of mixed media works by Patrick Berger, will open May 21 in Blowers Gallery in UNC Asheville's Ramsey Library. A reception with the artist will be held from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, May 22, in the gallery.

Writers at Home Spring Series Concludes with Readings from "The Great Smokies Review"

The Writers at Home spring series concludes with readings by contributors to recent issues of "The Great Smokies Review," the online literary magazine published by UNC Asheville's Great Smokies Writing Program. This event is free and open to the public and begins at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 20, at Malaprop's Bookstore/Café, 55 Haywood St., Asheville.

“Why Democracy Needs the Humanities” – Humanities Scholar Martha Nussbaum to Speak at UNC Asheville

Martha Nussbaum, world-renowned philosopher, scholar and champion of liberal education, will speak at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 21, in UNC Asheville’s Lipinsky Auditorium. The author of more than 25 books, Nussbaum will focus her talk on her 2010 work, “Not for Profit: Why Democracy Needs the Humanities” (Princeton University Press). This event is free and open to the public.

“Cherokee Journey to Forgiveness and Healing” – Patricia Grant to Speak at UNC Asheville

“Recognition: A Cherokee Journey to Forgiveness and Healing,” a talk by Patricia Grant, will take place at 12:15 p.m. Thursday, April 5 in UNC Asheville’s Karpen Hall, Laurel Forum. It is free and open to the public, and lunch is provided.
