UNC Asheville Hosts Talk by Noted Author Peter Turchi

UNC Asheville will host a talk by Peter Turchi, former director of the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College. Turchi will discuss “If You Lived Here, You’d be Home By Now: Reflections on Perceptions of Place” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, at UNC Asheville’s Laurel Forum, Karpen Hall. This event is free and open to the public.

UNC Asheville's 2009-2010 Writers at Home Series begins with readings by local authors Cathy Smith Bowers and Christine Hale at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, at Malaprop's Bookstore/Café, 55 Haywood St., downtown Asheville. The event is free and open to the public.

UNC Asheville Professor Appointed to the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium

UNC Asheville Philosophy Professor Gordon Wilson was recently appointed as a fellow at the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts for the 2011-2012 academic year. Each year, just some 10 fellowships are granted to eminent scholars, scientists and artists from around the world.

UNC Asheville Hosts Talk on Southern Religions by Renowned Scholar Samuel Hill

UNC Asheville's Religious Studies Department and History Department will host a talk on by noted southern religions scholar Samuel Hill at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 2, at UNC Asheville's Reuter Center. The talk -- "Tell About the South: Why Are They So Religious?" – will examine southern religions and religious history. The event is free and open to the public.

UNC Asheville, Buncombe County Public Libraries and Other Community Organizations Host Series of Events Focusing on Urban Renewal

From Asheville's East End neighborhood to the Ninth Ward in New Orleans, urban renewal and community dismemberment can have devastating effects on the residents. Clinical psychiatrist Mindy Fullilove calls the resulting stress "root shock," and it can have a negative impact on the entire community for decades.

"Root shock, at the level of the individual, is a profound emotional upheaval that destroys the working model of the world that had existed in the individual's head," says Fullilove. "Root shock, at the level of the local community… ruptures bonds, dispersing people to all the directions of the compass."

UNC Asheville Launches Writers on the Line Series; Inaugural Event Features Talks by Acclaimed Jewish Authors Adina Hoffman and Peter Cole

UNC Asheville will launch its new Writers on the Line series in February with talks by acclaimed Jewish authors Adina Hoffman and Peter Cole. The ongoing series will feature readings, workshops and programs by noted writers and artists. Hoffman will speak on February 8, followed by Cole on February 9. Both events are free and open to the public.
