UNC Asheville Dedicates New Wilma M. Sherrill Center; Facility to House Academic Programs, N.C. Center for Health & Wellness, Kimmel Arena

UNC Asheville celebrated the dedication of the Wilma M. Sherrill Center on Monday, which will house academic and outreach programs focused on disease prevention and healthy living.

North Asheville Tailgate Market at UNC Asheville Opens April 16; New Market Director Named

The North Asheville Tailgate Market, a Saturday morning tradition for those who love fresh produce, herbs and flowers, will reopen for its 31st season on Saturday, April 16, on the UNC Asheville campus. The market is open from 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays and offers plenty of convenient parking.

2011 Queer Studies Conference: "Queer as an Active Verb"

The 2011 UNC Asheville Queer Studies conference will take place March 31-April 2 in various locations on the campus. The conference is dedicated to the investigation of genders and sexualities, and is expected to attract roughly 100 participants from around the country, with workshops, readings, film screenings and performances.

The Disabled Body in Contemporary Art Discussed in Craft Lecture

Educator and author Ann Millett-Gallant will present a lecture based on her book, "The Disabled Body in Contemporary Art," in the next installment of the UNC Asheville Craft Studies Initiative lecture series, "Meet the Maker: Conversations of Meaning with Craftspeople." Millet-Gallant will discuss the work of disabled artists and the representation of disability in visual culture. The presentation will begin with a reception at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 17, in UNC Asheville's Owen Hall, room 302. The event is free and open to the public.

Wachovia Contributes $100,000 to UNC Asheville to Support Scholarships, Sherrill Center

Wachovia, a Wells Fargo Company, has contributed $100,000 to UNC Asheville. The funding will support a $25,000 Wachovia-Wells Fargo Endowed Scholarship for Future Teachers and provides $75,000 in unrestricted support to the new Wilma M. Sherrill Center, which houses the N.C. Center for Health & Wellness and Kimmel Arena.

February 28 Open House for New Asheville Branch of UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy will hold an open house and information session from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 28, at UNC Asheville's Highsmith University Union, Alumni Hall. The open house is for high school students, college students, and college graduates interested in applying to the doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) program that will be located in Asheville.

Registration Now Open for College for Seniors Spring Term

UNC Asheville's nationally renowned College for Seniors has opened registration for spring term courses, held March 21-May 13. Course catalogues were mailed today and course listings are available online. Classes will take place at UNC Asheville's Reuter Center, home of the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement.

WNC Men’s Leadership Conference to Enlist College Men in Preventing Gender-based Violence

Male students from area college campuses will gather to develop leadership in preventing gender based violence, in a special conference at UNC Asheville's Highsmith University Union from 5-9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22. The Western North Carolina Men’s Leadership Conference, co-sponsored by UNC Asheville and Our VOICE, Buncombe County’s sexual assault crisis and prevention center, is expected to draw participants from Warren Wilson College, Montreat College, Mars Hill College and Western Carolina University.

Renowned Nutritionist, Researcher and Health Advocate T. Colin Campbell to Make Rare Asheville Visit

T. Colin Campbell, nutrition expert, researcher, and author of the award-winning bestseller, "The China Study," will discuss his groundbreaking research during a visit to Asheville in February. Campbell has examined correlations between diet, lifestyle and health outcomes over many years among large numbers of people, and has become a leading advocate for the health benefits of an entirely plant-based diet. Former President Clinton recently cited "The China Study" in explaining how he lost 24 pounds by switching to a plant-based diet in hopes of improving his heart health.

Pat and Junius Grimes Donate More than 800 Tons of Stone to UNC Asheville

A local couple has made a lasting gift to the new Wilma M. Sherrill Center at UNC Asheville - - more than 800 tons of stone used in the construction of the center, which houses the N.C. Center for Heath & Wellness and Kimmel Arena.
