Archaeology, architecture and coins come together in study of Roman temple

Melanie Grunow Sobocinski, a specialist in Roman architecture and numismatics, presents a lecture, "The Capitoline on Coins: Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Roman Temple," at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, in UNC Asheville's Ramsey Library, Whitman Room.

Ballet events set for Diana Wortham Theatre and UNC Asheville in February

A night of live dance, films and presentations at the Diana Wortham Theatre on Feb. 12, and two special exhibitions at UNC Ashville during February, will highlight the lives and work of two legendary figures in ballet, Dame Sonia Arova and Oleg Briansky. These events, together titled "The Enchanted Wanderers: The Unknown Pages of the History of the Ballet," are free and open to the public.

New exhibit of photos of Uganda’s Bakonzo people to open at UNC Asheville

An exhibition of photos by Carrie Wagner of Uganda's Bakonzo people will open with a reception from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, at Blowers Gallery in UNC Asheville's Ramsey Library. RECEPTION RESCHEDULED: 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24.

Development economist Jonathan Morduch will speak about microfinance and global poverty in two talks at UNC Asheville on Tuesday, Jan. 22.

Republic of Korea Consul General He Beom Kim to Speak in Asheville

He Beom Kim, consul general for the Republic of Korea, will speak at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4 in UNC Asheville's Reuter Center. Kim's talk, "The Republic of Korea, Its Role and Leadership: The New Economies and Politics of the Asia-Pacific," is co-sponsored by the WNC chapter of the World Affairs Council, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at UNC Asheville, and the university's department of political science.

Russian Scholar Evgenii Kazartcev to Speak about Northern Renaissance Poetry

Russian scholar Evgenii Kazartcev will speak about Northern Renaissance poetry, offering the lecture, "The Nature and Origins of Iambic Verse: Early English, Dutch, German and Slavic Iambic Verse," at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, in UNC Asheville's New Hall, room 118. This event is free and open to the public.

2012 Amnesty International Film Festival Opens November 5

UNC Asheville's Amnesty International chapter presents a film festival, November 5-9, featuring four documentaries selected for their power, inspirational qualities, and ability to raise awareness of human rights issues.

Director of U.S. Special Envoy Office to Provide Update on Sudan Crisis

Larry Andre, director of the U.S. Special Envoy Office to Sudan, just returned from that country, will provide an update on ongoing crisis there which has caused the displacement of 900,000 people in the past year. His talk is sponsored by the World Affairs Council, the UNC Asheville Department of Political Science and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI). Andre will speak at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13 at the UNC Asheville Reuter Center, Manheimer Room.

In Wake of Hurricane Sandy, UNC Asheville Scientist Invites Public to Participate in Cyclone Research

Members of the public will learn how to participate in research on tropical cyclones via the internet, when Chris Hennon, UNC Asheville associate professor of atmospheric sciences, offers a public presentation from 4-5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, at Karpen Hall, room 038. This event is free and open to the public.

“Faces of Afghanistan” Portrait Exhibit to Open at UNC Asheville

Skip Rohde, just returned from Afghanistan, will open an exhibition of portraits, "Faces of Afghanistan," at the S. Tucker Cooke Gallery in UNC Asheville's Owen Hall.
