Great Smokies Writing Program Faculty Members to Present Reading

Great Smokies Writing Program faculty members Christine Hale and Marjorie Klein will read from their works at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 17, at Malaprop's Bookstore/Café, 55 Haywood St., downtown Asheville. The event is part of UNC Asheville's Writers at Home series, and is free and open to the public.
UNC Asheville's Music Department Offers Four April Concerts

UNC Asheville's Music Department will wrap up its spring semester concert series with four performances in April, including the annual gala concert featuring UNC Asheville student musicians, and a few surprise guests. Admission for each concert is $5 at the door; free for students with ID.
Theatre UNCA Stages “Flaming Guns of the Purple Sage”

Theatre UNCA will stage Jane Martin’s horror-comedy crossover play, “Flaming Guns of the Purple Sage,” offering three evening performances and a Sunday matinee, February 23-27 at UNC Asheville’s Carol Belk Theater. Tickets go on sale February 17 for all performances, with student, senior citizen and general admission pricing.
UNC Asheville’s Super Saturday Program Offers Super Classes for Kids

Saturdays are super this spring at UNC Asheville! Academically gifted, creative, and/or highly motivated students in grades 3-8 have the opportunity to explore foreign language, model rocketry, magic, and much more at UNC Asheville’s spring semester Super Saturday program, beginning March 5. More than 12,000 children from across Western North Carolina have explored their special interests through hands-on learning on the UNC Asheville campus as part of Super Saturdays.
Dan Pierce Headlines Faculty Book Talk Series

Dan Pierce, UNC Asheville history professor, will kick off the spring semester series of Brown Bag Book Talks with UNC Asheville Faculty Authors with a reading from his acclaimed book, "Real NASCAR: White Lightning, Red Clay, and Big Bill France." The reading will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 25, in the Special Collections Reading Room of Ramsey Library.

UNC Asheville Students and Faculty Help Unravel Mysteries of Recent Severe Winter Weather

As people across the Southeast hunkered down for massive snowfalls this month, UNC Asheville Atmospheric Sciences professor Doug Miller and his students headed out into the storm. The group worked around the clock launching weather balloons to collect important atmospheric data that will help scientists better understand winter weather. In the process, they were able to provide information to the National Weather Service to ensure accurate forecasts.
Writers at Home Series Continues with Readings by Great Smokies Writing Program Poetry Class

The reading begins at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, at Malaprop's Bookstore/Café, 55 Haywood St., downtown Asheville. It is free and open to the public.
UNC Asheville Celebrates December Commencement

More than 2,000 family and friends gathered on Saturday morning to celebrate UNC Asheville's newest graduates. Some 207 students were honored during UNC Asheville's third annual December Commencement Ceremony, which was held at the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium.
UNC Asheville's Holly Iglesias Awarded Prestigious NEA Literature Fellowship

Holly Iglesias, poet, translator and lecturer in UNC Asheville's Master of Liberal Arts Program, has been awarded a prestigious Creative Writing Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). Iglesias is the only North Carolinian and one of only 42 poets chosen nationally to receive the $25,000 fellowship for 2011.
