Two upcoming concerts at UNC Asheville will feature members of the music faculty.

“Well-a-Bration” Events Support Healthier Eating

Nutrition workshops, garden tours and cooking demonstrations in the Sherrill Center’s new teaching kitchen will all be part of “Well-a-Bration,” a week of activities showcasing UNC Asheville’s health and wellness programs. Well-a-Bration, which takes place Monday, Sept. 12, through Saturday, Sept. 17 at UNC Asheville, will also feature exercise programs, meetings of health policy leaders, health and sports expos, and a talk by Dr. Patch Adams, the well-known physician, clown, and advocate.

UNC Asheville Professor Mark Gibney Given National Human Rights Scholarship Award

Mark Gibney, UNC Asheville professor, author, and creator of the website politicalterrorscale.org, has been named the 2011 Distinguished Scholar of Human Rights by the American Political Science Association (APSA). He will receive the award at APSA’s annual meeting, which will take place September 1-4 in Seattle.

New UNC Asheville Faculty Make Local Debuts with Jazz Presentations

The fall music season at UNC Asheville begins with free midday presentations by the two newest members of the Music Department faculty, William Bares and Brian Felix, both assistant professors, and both keyboard artists.

New Exhibit to Feature Works by UNC Asheville Studio Art Faculty

Works by 11 UNC Asheville Art Department faculty members will be featured in a wide-ranging exhibition Aug. 26-Sept. 16 at UNC Asheville's S. Tucker Cooke Gallery. The show kicks off the gallery's 2011-2012 season. An opening reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, in the gallery.

23 Liberal Arts Colleges to Meet at UNC Asheville as Part of National Science Foundation Effort to Strengthen Undergraduate Research

More than 100 faculty and administrators from colleges around the country will gather at UNC Asheville June 28-30 for a conference aimed at strengthening undergraduate research in the sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics. The conference is hosted by the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC), which is headquartered at UNC Asheville.

UNC Asheville Celebrates 83rd Annual Commencement

More than 5,000 family and friends gathered on UNC Asheville's Quadrangle Saturday morning to celebrate UNC Asheville's 2011 graduating class. Some 691 students were honored as the Class of 2011 during the 83nd Commencement Ceremony, including 447 spring graduates, 212 winter graduates and 32 summer graduates.

Spring Issue of "The Great Smokies Review" Now Online; Authors Offer Public Reading May 15

The Spring 2011 issue of The Great Smokies Review, a Web-based literary magazine published by UNC Asheville’s Great Smokies Writing Program (GSWP), is now online at thegreatsmokiesreview.org.

UNC Asheville’s Sophie Mills Honored for Teaching Excellence by UNC Board of Governors

Sophie J.V. Mills, known for her academic rigor, passion for teaching and commitment to her students, was named today a recipient of the 2011 Award for Teaching Excellence from the University of North Carolina’s Board of Governors. Mills, professor and longtime chair of UNC Asheville’s Classics Department, was nominated by a committee of the UNC Asheville faculty. She will receive a commemorative bronze medallion and a $7,500 cash prize.

Theatre UNCA Stages "Reefer Madness: The Musical"

Theatre UNCA will probe political parallels between the 1930s and the present through a satirical comedy, "Reefer Madness: The Musical," with five performances from April 13-17 in UNC Asheville's Carol Belk Theater. Tickets go on sale April 7, with student, senior citizen and general admission pricing.
